Hi, this is Dr. Drew. One interesting phenomenon that sometimes happens with patients is that they never have an adult tooth follow the baby tooth and grow into a specific area. Common areas that we see this are the lateral incisors which are the teeth that are just one off of center. Sometimes the baby tooth will grow but the adult tooth will never form. This is also fairly common in the premolar region or the area right behind the canines on the top or the bottom arch. There are different ways to manage something like this. In our office, what we often do is allow the patient to grow to full stature before attempting to restore that area with something more permanent. With baby teeth, over time the roots will typically spontaneously shorten and the tooth will loosen up until it eventually just falls out and it leaves a space. Often times, specifically in the lateral region on top (which was one off of center) we will do implants or a bridge in that area to give that natural look and appearance. There are a lot of really great things that can be done now days in dentistry to replace those missing teeth. On the lower teeth, if it is in the premolar area, a lot of times we will leave that baby molar in for quite a while. I have seen those make it to the third or fourth decade of life. Eventually that tooth will almost always loosen up and come out and at that point we need to deal with that space to maintain the bite and the position of the adjacent teeth. It is not the end of the world if your dentist tells you that an adult tooth is not growing in or is congenitally missing. Fortunately, now a days, there are a lot of things that we can do to maintain the beauty and function of your smile. Yes, I have a baby tooth. I found that out at the age of sixteen. I'm now fifty-three and during a routine dental visit, I was told my baby tooth has long routes as my adult teeth, and the adult tooth that should've replaced the baby tooth, is on the other side of my mouth, embedded up in the gum. Crazy, isn't it? Hey, if it doesn't bother me, why have it removed, I say. :-)

I’m 28 and I still have one baby tooth (a bottom premolar) that never had an adult replacement. every now and then it gets loose if I eat something that I need to really chew (apple, steak, beef jerky) but it’s still here :))))

That's normal. Since it was forced out, the next one won't come in until it would have been ready in the first place. I've forced a tooth out because I was just bored. It didn't start coming in till over 3 years later.

Don't worry. Give it a bit more time for my son it took over half a year till the front teeth grew back. In that age group (6-10) it's common that children lose their teeth.

I have two milk teeth premolars which is one on right and second on left on bottom teeth. And i got braces only on upper straightening since my orthodontist told removing lower 2 premolars cause to remove upper 2 premolars for symmetry. And he suggested not to straighten lower teeth and let the milk tooth be there. I'm 33 and dentist told milk tooth may or may not stay for more years. Idk if I should remove 4 premolars and straighten all OR not remove milk tooth at all. Has anybody faced this same situation?

I'm missing 6 of my perminant teeth and I've always wondered why. Thank you. My dentist told me that if some of the gaps don't close up and the baby teeth in their place fall out, I will gave to get a bridge to help me eat. I am currently 14 and living in the UK which is good because I can get free health care from the NHS. Another thing it is probably genetic because my mum and sister are both missing one of their teeth. Is it a condition? If so what is the name of it?

Hey man, last year like in july or so my dentist removed a baby tooth for me to get "braquets" (im latin american sorry for my english) so since then, my tooth is stuck and it doesnt want to come out. There are a number of things that could be happening if the tooth is not coming in. It could be ankylosed, or there could be something in the way of it. Your dentist should be able to help you figure out why it isn't coming in.

I'm 14 and have braces. All of my baby teeth are gone; All of them but I am still missing 4 teeth which is not very nice to see. Because I'm missing the 2 two upper lateral incisors and the 2 canines. On the left side of my of my upper part i can see a tooth in the gum but it has been there for a long time more than a year or ss i would say. It hasn't come out yet I don't know why. Some permanent teeth take longer to grow in than others. If you teeth came out too early it would take longer for your permanent teeth to come in. Your dentist can take an x-ray and tell you if you have permanent teeth. Most people do, so it might just be taking a bit longer for them to come in.

I'm 25 and retained 8 baby teeth. My ortho didn't want to get rid of them because it would've been too many spaces and it's pretty weird the way some of the teeth matured. In my upper I have only 1 perm canine. In my bottom both baby canines are there. I have braces and now I'm kinda worried if my ortho made the best decision. I don't want to lose my baby teeth and ruin the work that's costing me thousands

I don't have permanent teeth, I only had some for around 3 or 4 teeth. Luckily I've never lost many teeth (dentist try to keep my teeth in as much as possible) my 2 front teeth were lost and they grew back. But I've lost 2 teeth so far but they never grew back and never will, I've got the gaps closed so no one notices. The main question I want to ask is, what is it called when you have little to no baby teeth to replace permanent ones?

I have a baby tooth on the top 3rd one in from the front, the temporary dentist says the adult tooth is underneath the baby tooth but hasn’t grown in and is common she says... she didn’t really give much info as she was in done and out so she could deal with the next customer! If it falls out will my adult tooth grow?? If not what can be done to get my adult tooth in and are the procedures expensive?? Thanks

I pulled my still attacked baby molar with pliers because I was so angry on how I had to eat because it was like they weren’t giving me the same presence as my other adult teeth, so I view them as a hazard. I wonder if that was the right choice, because I’m not even sure I care for the implant. If I do I’m sure it be a gold one because #gohardorgohome

Ideally all of the permanent teeth would follow the baby teeth, but missing permanent teeth is more common than a lot of people realize.

That is pretty common actually. Sometimes it takes several months for a permanent tooth to start growing in behind a baby tooth. It all depends on how close the permanent tooth is following the baby tooth. If you are really worried, go to a dentist and have them do an x-ray to see if there is a permanent tooth there.

Sometimes if the teeth come out to early it can be several months before the permanent teeth come in. It is likely nothing to worry about, but a dentist can take an x-ray to make sure that her permanent teeth are developing.

If you don't brush your teeth you will not be removing the plaque each day. This will build up to be a hard substance called calculus. You are more likely to get tooth decay and gum disease if you are not brushing because plaque contains bacteria that can aggravate both tooth decay and gum disease.

Fatema Hossain baby teeth can often last for a long time if there is not a permanent tooth growing in behind it. If your dentist is only suggesting it for aesthetic reasons and you like your smile how it is, then there is no reason that you need to get braces or get rid of the baby tooth. Only a dentist looking at your teeth would be able to tell you if that is your situation though. If you don't like what the first dentist said you can always get a second opinion.

Oxford Dental Care I do have a tooth behind it, so that is why I asked this question. I have a permanent teeth behind it, but don't want to remove my teeth or get braces. Is it life threading or harmful to still keep my baby tooth regardless if it falls out or not. My dentist I think said to get braces because my permanent teeth probably won't come down to due my age.

As mentioned before, it is not possible to diagnose your situation without seeing your mouth and your x-rays. It might be fine to leave your tooth as it is rarely life threatening unless it keeps getting infected. Find a dentist in your town who offers free second opinions (many do). Tell them your concerns and see what they say.
