It’s important to remember when breaking your calf that all calves are different. In some cases, a calf may break in a few days, while others take weeks or months. If your calf is more difficult to break, try to avoid getting frustrated. Slow down and focus on keeping the experience positive for both you and the calf.
Jon Gevelinger recommends working calves in pairs when possible. Pair your difficult calf with a calf that’s already broken. Cattle are herd animals, so they’ll automatically feel more comfortable. Then slowly introduce your calf to new things like being tied out and getting a bath, and focus on making each experience feel as good as possible.
