it's more energy efficient that way. Imagine trying to power and run millions of separate simulations each with their own AI to fill out the population each human would interact with. This would never work and you'd have a net energy loss from doing this. Way more efficient to have most humans in a single unified simulation. They probably do segment off parts of the simulation onto different regions of the globe. Maybe that's based on population density of certain areas being simulated so when leaving cities you would end up moving from one server/simulation onto another. But they'd mostly all still be on connection with each other so things that happen in one area could still be communicated to another. (so things like world events still get communicated across everyone in the simulation like if a war breaks out in the middle east or something) But yeah separate simulations for every human they have connected would be hugely more energy intensive then just having them all in the same simulation so makes sense that it's not a thing. :P

the pills were software for make choice real. it's imposible the both application finished work in same time in the computer world . let's thik there is multi threading and both app started the running same time. one of them always finish it's job before other in miliseconds. in this situation neo's choice depends on code quality of the pills.

In one of the comics a woman keeps waking up in a pod with her husband close yet at the same time far away.
