Money doesn't mean much if there's nothing to spend it on, no infrastructure, the world is falling apart... If the world ends, I'm sure we'd not care about money at best and trade items directly at worst, with no one caring about gold or its 54% increases.
That would be a stupid idea. Gold has value because it is not available so much or its rarity and difficult to extract, but if it becomes so widely available it becomes like sand

What IF Someone of us don't want to survive? Reading the comments- people are almost praying for another asteroid. Our lives are hard. Some of us endure abuse after abuse. We suffer and endure poverty, disease, hunger, then get to watch the rich and powerful slowly eat and digest us for little more than chuckles. We're all tired of this crappy world.
Couple things I have to say as a geologist, the next asteroid can hit anywhere in the globe, asteroids move in different speed and above all, their composition varies. It is very different case if 10km asteroid is mainly composed of rock versus metals. If it is 10km iron-nickel asteroid, I would advice atheists to start praying for their dear life, it would be end of humanity and they who die first and fast are the lucky ones.
Ever thought about the fact that Mars is far nearer to the asteroid belt than Earth? Mini asteroids can cause more havoc there, than on earth, where our atmosphere cause minor ones to burn up…
I've actually like the space laser technique myself. I don't know why, but I think the idea of burning off a little bit of the surface of the asteroid to act as a small thruster to redirect it sounds better to me than blowing up it into a bunch of little chunks to end up breaking the Earth.
Gold does not have any intrinsic value. Hence it's zero useful as money if the civilization has to be rebuilt. You can't eat gold, you can't drink it. It won't keep you warm, etc. Gold is accepted as money money only because someone long time ago liked what it looks like and decided to allow the regular people trade it with him for food if they bring it in. That psychological effect was the only reason people started accepting gold from others too: they knew that if they give food to others in exchange for gold, they are guaranteed to get food for themselves from the big guy who is exchanging food for gold, if people bring it in.
At minute 10:00 things get really creppy: I can image corporation deflecting an astroid straight to Earth, almost ending civilization - just to gain profit from the resources the asteroid has.

The Tower of Jericho was built 8,000 BCE. And we have DINOSAUR FOSSILS that date back around 240 MILLION years. The Vredefort Crater in South Africa is the largest known impact crater on Earth, and is estimated to be around 2 BILLION years old. The Grand Canyon is between 5 and 70 MILLION years old. These are things that I easily found by doing some simple research and learning the facts of history.

What if the 3 rocky planets(not including Mercury) fused together sorta DBZ style, and were placed in Mars' orbit? Not collision, just merged like many other impossible scenarios. Teleported into each other, and merged together. Atmospheres mixed. Would life be able to continue?
