Imagine a full fledged sonic game like this with beautiful environments, multiple characters, cool story, banger music, and packed content like sonic unleashed
I feel like it's almost criminal this fan game is locked to PlayStation/Dreams. Mixing some open levels from Sonic Utopia and some more linear levels like this would make for a killer Sonic game.
It's actually a mix of the US verson (Sonic Boom) and the JP/EU verson (You can do anything/Toot Toot Sonic Warrior) of the Sonic CD main theme NEVER LAKE IS WHERE LITTLE PLANET IS AND THE PARKOUR MOVES ARE WHAT SONIC DOES IN THE CD OPENING Aka what Sonic Overdrive is And i love that...
11:44-12:08 No it makes no sense... That was established is the first Sonic game... Rolling down a hill makes you go fast Rolling up a hill slows you down... THAT IS THE CORE GAMEPLAY OF SONIC
Honestly looks amazing. I think the camera is the only problem I see. And maybe it'd be a bit better if rings came to you cuz it looks hard to get them.
I think you figured it out yourself, but in momentum based games generally you use the roll to gain speed on downward slopes and to roll through enemies (without having to jump and interrupting the momentum). Momentum games are probably harder for newcomers, but I think they fundamentally add replayability to the game, because every playthrough is different, and the better you get as the player, the more fluid and rewarding the game feels. You can't just press down a boost button and not worry about momentum and enemies. You also can't just perma spindash like in Frontiers without loosing momentum. You have to dynamically decide whether you should start to roll or not. Learn to use the environment to your advantage. Train your timing in when to jump and when to roll and when to cancel roll etc. I keep going back to games like Sonic Utopia, because even though it's just one level, it feels different enough every time. I played through Sonic Frontiers, liked it, but after finishing the story I never really have the urge to get back into the game again... The first time experience for Sonic Frontiers was really satisfying, but imo it has little replayability.
I completely understand that forsure. I've played tons of momentum based Sonic games so you'd think I'd understand the gist of it by now 😅. I respect momentum based gameplay for all the reasons you named. I think I just find the gameplay experience not as fun for me. Once again, I don't hate it. It's completely cool, especially when it's expanded on like in this fangame. But, I just personally find boost gameplay more satisfying with it's own amount of memorization and fluidity depending how fast the player can adapt as well as the skill ceiling being at an inviting height. I've always been a fan of having the speed boost a button press away and then choosing how to progress on the fly. It's part of why I like to go back and play the modern sonic stages in Generations over and over again. I like how easy it is to gain speed and begin maintaining it. While earning it does feel rewarding, I most times just wanna get to the action. I have an overall fondess for both but I'd be lying if I said I don't often get the urge to press square and get going.
And there a a lot of more fan games in dreams If you ever want to play a sonic game with a good resolution and for free this is the game And this game is really really Cheap really recommend
