I believe he also said he COULD have added Wario if he based his moveset around Mario, but thought Wario was too unique to just mimic Mairo and deserved better than that. This idea would instead be used for Dr. Mario. Not sure if he actually said this, though.
@@rayminishi689 Yeah technically Mario borrowed the ground pound from Yoshi from SMW2 which technically was also borrowed from Bowser who did it first in SMB3
Wario should have taken Ganon's spot in Melee, and Ganondorf should have been a Brawl newcomer. This way, Wario would have been closer to his portrayal in Wario Land, and Ganondorf wouldn't have been rushed into being a Captain Falcon clone
Personally, as much as I love WarioWare, I really wish there was a good balance with Wario Land moves in his overall moveset. As a Wario Land fan, this video was heartwarming :3
Honestly, I think they’ve put in a heap of his Wario Land moves. His dash attack and crawl animation come from it, and if you look at his landing lag animation on his back air, he mimics his ground pound
If Wario was planned for Melee, I doubt they could even pull a lot from Wario Land 4 because of the short development time. I could see concepts like Wario's transformations being done, but I don't think specific animations would be ready to be referenced.
@@GodOfGreed most likely, Sakurai said he doesn’t really know much about Wario games other than a bit of WarioWare, he even controversially got rid of the Shoulder Bash (that was really more of the tackle from WL3’s golf instead of the real thing) in Sm4sh and replaced it with some random backhanded punch that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but he may’ve also preferred to give him more uniqueness, otherwise chances are that we would have gotten Wario as the slower, heavy hitting Mario instead of Dr. Mario, and having a different size is no problem for clones because Young Link and Pichu exist
@@Improvisado64 okay, I’ve been looking it up and…yeah, I can’t find that, weird, I do remember somewhere mentioning he’s only ever played WarioWare games prior to Wario’s development in Brawl, even though Shake It was also being developed at a similar time (even the Stonecarving City theme is an extension of Wario’s victory theme that was made for Smash!), soooo okay, what I said was an exaggeration, or just a straight lie coming from foggy memory, at best only thing he did do was remove his Shoulder Bash for the sake of “making him stronger”, saying he prioritizes the character being fun and enjoyable over being faithful, which was ironic considering the og Smash attack was pretty good and the new one was and still is way less useful, so it ended up being a nerf, not a buff, buuut that’s really it as far as I can find, sooo, sorry for that dumb misinformation :,c
It's so funny; throughout the different smash entries since Brawl and various Smash fan games, it's Wario of all characters that has SO MANY moveset changes and different moves.
the perfect wario would be two warios one wario that is the one that we have now (biker alt only) and wario land wario (overalls only) we have like 2 marios, 3 links, 2 samus etc. so this could work
Well here's the thing. -dr mario existing in smash is stupid. -having three links is kinda redundant, but not as bad as dr mario. -and dark samus doesn't count. Having two wario's is really pointless to me. The current wario isn't even STRICTLY warioware. It'd be better if we could COMBINE all of these elements together. No need to segregate them. Also, I really hate dr mario. Have I mentioned that?
Wario is by far the only character I don't want to change at all, is just perfect as he is, instead, what if we had two Warios? We have 2 Marios, 3 Samus, 4 Marths, and 3 Links, why not a 2nd Wario that resembles Wario Land?
@@MishKoz I feel that this theme would've fitted Wario better for a "Wario Wins" theme, for how much of a Goofball and a Jerk he is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-se-zaDSbslo.html
How has no one ever thought about wario's neutral special being him throwing bombs?! It's his most iconic weapon, and even his personal favorite! He's used them more than any other character, and certainly more than waluigi.
I mentioned it in another reply, but I did briefly consider it. That or a fireball attack that would act like an explosion/kill move, a-la Super Mario Land 2 final boss
Great video. Amazing attention to detail, from the model you used from Melee's Wario Trophy, and the wonderful renders produced from Blender, as well as the careful examination of the source material to develop his moveset and animations, and the mention of Project M. Sub'd!
In actuality, even though I don’t play melee (or any smash games that much as I’m not big on the series) Wario would be sick in Melee, he’s just a chad
every day in the morning i sit up and i ponder questions like "why was golden plains made instead of a wario land stage?" "why isnt bowser's castle a stage?" "why did smash ultimate bring back rainbow ride instead of making the mario 3 airship a stage given that bowser jr is in the roster?" "why is every mario related stage a fucking stupid green plains level or 1-1? (except for rainbow road whose pride is selfjerking)" "if they want to not represent wario land in his moveset so much then why don't they just make a stage about it?" "who fucking let the entirety of wario land only have a single song in ult's soundtrack yet let have mario sports superstars have two?" "where is wario in melee?" glad to see a video address these issues :)
I'm so glad you included vb wario land, imo it's the best one and you can see a lot of ideas starting to develop that would eventually be used in later wario land games. Great job on the video.
@@MishKoz Ah, that's right. I missed that. In Ultimate however, it looks even more like the ground pount than in Brawl and 4. He falls down more "snappy", and his arms are raised like in his ground pound animation from the WL games
@@rodrigomorales563 they could also move his Waft to be an attacking taunt like Kazuya and Luigi, it’s already a disrespectful move, it works perfect like a super taunt, and the online should let players use those moves because they’re not really taunts
Definitely one of the best interpretations of a more Wario Land-inspired Wario moveset, that's for sure. I also absolutely adore the stage concept. Great work on the video!
This is actually a really cool video! Not only did you put a lot of work into the visuals, but you also were very careful not to reuse too many similar ideas between moves and animations. I love it! I've thought about a lot of what-ifs like this, too. Basically, what would Melee be like if it had more dev time and could represent each franchise more thoroughly? For example, I've always thought if they had more time, they might add Scizor to represent Pokemon Gold and Silver since he represents so much new content from GS between being a new pokemon, a new evolution, a new type, and even representing held items because of his method of evolution, all while fitting perfectly with the rest of the roster thanks to being bipedal. But I'd love to explore this idea further to the degree that you have with Wario.
I feel like the shoulderbash would feel more natural as his side-B, since you could then possibly jump during it as well, making it more accurate to WL.
I like to imagine how people would see in the hurry up segments of Wario Land 4. It’s crystal clear the closer things are to you but the farther you see the more distorted it gets, until you actually get there in which it’s clear again
DBFZ is on another level of accuracy (but tbf they did have like 40 years worth of Dragon Ball media to work with instead of like, a handful of games lol)
With Melee Modding starting to become more accessible, I hope to eventually see Wario in Melee with a moveset like this. It's only a matter of time now.
Hey, that's pretty neat. Those are some cool ideas for Wario, I've never played WarioLand so it was interesting to hear what a WarioLand fan would do, and I understood all of the nods and references as they were explained clearly. That was a really good video, I like it.
Man, I love this interpretation of Wario so much, especially his specials like the Down B (being a special flatten state). He even still has super goofy, cartoonish angle. I like how you said that this isn’t a “Fixing Wario” moveset but rather a What if Moveset, it’s fun to look at characters and see what directions they would taken under right circumstances. I kind of like Wario’s actual moveset but I totally agree that he should have some Wario Land influence in his Smash design.
7:29 Its not too far off. Sakurai gets permission to take a look at games early before making fighters sometimes. But since Brawl released 7 years after Wario Land 4 it wouldn't make much sense in this case.
I love Melee, not really for its competitive gameplay (although that can be fun of course), but for its unique and weird aesthetic. As you described so aptly, its characters are sort of weird "HD" versions of their N64 appearances. My favorite is for sure Luigi, who I always affectionately refer to as "round-faced Luigi." I'd love it if you did another video like this one but explaining your ideal version of Luigi's Melee moveset based on Luigi's Mansion, but I understand a video like this is a big undertaking so it's just a pipe dream. Anyway, going back to the whole "Melee aesthetic" thing, for that reason I get a big kick out of you specifically using a Wario model that would represent his appearance at that time. I especially enjoyed seeing his model in all the extra weird poses for his special moves, and the alternate colors. Cool stuff. Cool video too! Nice work. Gave this one a like, which I don't do often.
Models are definitely very hard to animate, but you might want to consider putting this version of Wario in Rivals of Aether workshop, especially since the moves that originate from Wario Land 4 wouldn’t have to be made from scratch
I feel like if Wario were in Melee, he would definitely not be like this, this feels way too reference heavy for the movesets that this game has. I think if Wario were actually in Melee, he's be very similar to Brawl Wario, but with smoother animations, Shoulder Bash instead of Bike, Ground Pound instead of Waft, and maybe a new Neutral B
Excellent video. I still very much wish Wario Land was represented more in Smash, especially having more Wario Land moves in his moveset. Wario Land is one of my favorite franchises, and I'd love it if more of the Macho Man Wario from those games was able to shine through some more in actual Smash games.
@@Mr.Feather130 The problem with Wario Land is that the combat is not great. Wario boss fights consist of throwing stuff at the bosses, that's not enough for a Smash move-set. Although his Forward Smash and forward tilt are reference's to Wario Land 4.
@@orangeslash1667 yeah but I hope both wario and Sonic had a huge complete overhaul in a Future super smash bros game (sonic moveset should be based on his combat skills in the upcoming Sonic frontiers)
@@Mr.Feather130 I think it would be for the best if the Next Smash would have just original characters and getting rid of everyone else. It's too hard to find a middle ground between representation and balance. If getting rid of representation will strengthen creative freedom, then so be it.
The neutral air belly flop reminds me of the archetypical "body splash" air attack in fighting game grapplers popularized by Zangief from Street Fighter.
20:14 for the all famous "E-E-E-Excellent!" By the way, the song at 1:58 is the Graham Blvd cover of Secret Agent Man featured in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show episode _On Her Majesty's Sewer Service._
A spot dodge followed by an attack did exist in Smash. It was one of Lucario’s custom Down B moves in Smash 4. It was definitely far more interesting than his original Down B.
Wario's moveset in Smash is a crime against humanity... Sakurai could have used so much from the Wario Land series, but instead he just made up a bunch of random stuff for him to make him le wacky characteur >:C Sakurai even removed Wario's iconic shoulder bash in Smash 4
I just wish Wario's down throw was more like the piledriver move from Wario World, where he grabs an opponent, spins abit in the air and slams into the ground with them, burying them in the ground. The spin throw is also a sort of reference to Wario World which I like, in Wario World you grab enemies and spin them around before throwing them.
Great video, man! Just finished watching and when it comes to your content, I love how in-depth you go when you want to explore something in/about a game.
@@MishKoz I'm not sure why yoshi island was spared by the melee community, but its the expectation that makes the rule. Almost every map with a slope was banned in 4 and ultimate
Wouldn’t Wario have 2 stages in Melee, since every series has 2 stages (aside from Ice Climber, Fire Emblem, and G&W?) I think a second stage (that isn’t Wario’s Castle) should be Wario’s Plane from Wario Land 3, or maybe Inside Wario’s Castle with the rushing water from WL2
If Wario was in Melee he'd probably replace someone like 'Ganon' as he was rushed into being Capt. Falcon clone or 'Young Link' as he's literally a Link Clone and has no references to 'Majora's Mask' also he could just be Mario with a ground pound move to replace the down special and a charging move as the for/backwards special if he's in Melee
If you ask me, Wario's shoulder bash works better as a dash attack because it being a forward smash looks fucking jank and works along the same line as other characters woth shoulder bashes as their move like Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, and Terry I think. Wario's charging run from Wario Land 4 is meant to go on for longer considering that move is meant to be like a bullet train hitting someone, so that lasting for 3/4th of a second feels unnatural.
22:07 oh I see how it is. so Jigglypuff, one of the most adorable pokemon does... whatever that's supposed to be as a losing animation. but Wario, out of all the characters, not just claps in happiness when someone beats him but also shouts for them! this is outrageously out of character and thats how I feel about Wario in smash
The tweak I would make to this move set would be his down throw being his ground punch From Wario Land shake it, where he would throw his opponent down, pause for a second, and slam his fist into their chest
How in the actual hell did Game & Watch get into Smash before Wario? The only people who remembered Game & Watch were the 50-year-old parents that were forced to play the games with their kids, and Wario ... well, he's Wario. He's awesome.
