From the surface of the moon, the Earth does not move from it's position in the sky as shown in the animation. The position of the Sun would change, but since the same side of the moon always faces the Earth (give or take a few degrees back and forth) there is no "Earthrise" on the moon. The Astronauts experienced Earthrise, but that was because they were orbiting the Moon and so their perspective changed as they went around.
@prop0042
@prop0042 9 лет назад
How to survive on the moon: Step 1: Put magnets in the floor, and imbed iron along your spine, joints, arms, legs, etc. to deal with the lower gravity causing weird stuff with your spine. Step 2: Be underground to get away from the radiation, temperatures, lack of oxygen, etc. Step 3: Have oxygen recyclers and water recyclers. These exist, they're in use on the ISS, as a matter of fact. Step 4: Have some sort of power generation. Solar panels would work, but they wouldn't be receiving constant power. A nuclear reactor would be a nuclear reactor. Possibly use some form of reactor powered by the fission of hydrogen and oxygen in water. Or fusion into water. I dunno, nuclear hydro power basically. Step 5: Grow fruits, vegetables, and nuts (to provide protein) in order to have food and not die. Step 6: Build an ansible so you can play videogames with someone on earth and not go insane from being along.
@JiggleWiggleBagel
@JiggleWiggleBagel 9 лет назад
***** Dam. Step 6. I have playing on Earth with a low connection. How the heck could ANYONE stand for that 3 second delay time!

@EmilioKolomenski
@EmilioKolomenski 9 лет назад
***** Well, nuclear reactors are, by far, the best energy alternative we have right now and with the right care taken to it, their risk is minimal. That said, solar panels could work by incorporating a simple energy storage system. As always, the hardest part would be moving all the materials to the moon (it's the very reason why this hasn't been done yet). Going into orbit is hella expensive.

@celestialtree8602
@celestialtree8602 7 лет назад
Venus is a lot more dangerous than the Moon or Mars, due to toxic gas clouds and crazy heat. It would be an Earth-like planet, but there are a bunch of greenhouse gases in its atmosphere left over from its forming. That is slowly happening to Earth

What if we created a weighted suit that simulated the other 5/6ths of earths gravity?And stayed in underground bunkers (unless gathering supplies or launching/landing) to help keep radiation problems down, and kept in sync with earth time to help prevent sleep problems?
@proot.
@proot. 8 лет назад
that's actually the most reasonable, there's just not much on the moon.
@mchevre
@mchevre 7 лет назад
That would help with the bone density loss, but if you think about it, it only helps a little, because the overall gravity on our bodies including our internal organs would still be only 1/6th. The only time our bodies would feel the full gravity effect would be essentially just our leg or arm muscles when we try to lift something or move our feet.

In Mass Effect I went to the moon to screw around in my Mako. I fired several shots at Earth thinking it would literally rain on someone's parade. And now I find out that my Mako rounds just orbit the Moon. I'm so disillusioned :(
@stavros141
@stavros141 8 лет назад
Would living underground be a viable option? Heating shouldn't be a problem and radiation can be minimized. Hell even building a structure in a deep crater and then covering it with moon soil could be doable. There are a ton of things that could propel us into space age: telescopes situated on the moon, easier launch into space and easier construction, better conditioning for long term missions, reusable rockets like the ones SpaceX recently built. I'm obviously no scientist but the reason we haven't done this yet seems to be because we don't want to and not because we can't.

Man... If being on the moon did actually look like that when you were showing the time lapse of Earth's phases, I'm sure I'd get a little queasy. It just looks like you're orbiting around something else instead of something else orbiting around you. I just looks so amazingly crazy...
@VintageLJ
@VintageLJ 9 лет назад
Do you not get queasy on Earth, then, considering we orbit the sun, but to us it looks like it orbits us.
@CobaltFlytrap
@CobaltFlytrap 9 лет назад
VintageLJ Yes, but since both the sun and the Earth would be in the sky at the same time on the moon, it makes for more reference points. Since you don't usually see the moon and sun at the same time on the Earth, it is harder to feel. Either way, I wouldn't be sure if queasy is the right word. It would be an amazing feeling regardless.

How are you able to determine elevation on the moon? There is no sea level?
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 8 лет назад
Effectively any measurement of elevation is simply saying that it is +/- from some reference value, on Earth it's actually a contrived value since sea level changes a mean value is used which in effect results in an ellipsoid you could easily create an ellipsoid for the moon just by taking it's polar and equatorial radius and measure elevations as deviation from said model ellipsoid in fact this would be a handy way to go about it for modern satellite mapping and navigation technologies since it makes the math simple similar to the way GPS makes use of reference ellipsoids to model Earth.

@LeonardGreenpaw
@LeonardGreenpaw 9 лет назад
All one needs to do to create a stable atmosphere on the moon is to add ferrous and chargable particulates to the atmosphere. The difference in temperature between the light and dark sides due to the slow revolutions will cause a pressure differential and thus powerful wind storms from the light side to the dark side. The wind storms cause friction among the chargeable materials which magnetizes the atmosphere, and that means the atmosphere holds itself up more firmly and increases in pressure beyond what it would be if not magnetized
@Novumic
@Novumic 9 лет назад
The problem isn't if the object has a magnetic field or not, but if it has enough of it. Take Mars for example, it has a magnetic field but not enough so its atmosphere is way too thin to contain water and all sorts of other important life stuff. I highly doubt a thin layer of atmosphere would be enough to generate the magnetic field necessary for sustainable protection.
@LeonardGreenpaw
@LeonardGreenpaw 9 лет назад
Novumic Mars has a lot less of a field than earth does, and a lot less of an atmosphere as a result. The moon has none of either. The thinness of my proposed sphere is not the source of power, its power comes not from the force of gravity but the force gained through the thermal differentials which is according to this video, very high

I think Venus would be the most comfortable planet in the solar system to live on (as long as you're living in a hot air balloon in the upper atmosphere). At that point, atmospheric pressure would be equal to that of earth, the temperature would be quite comfortable, and you'd experience roughly 24 hour days since the winds circle Venus quite quickly. Also, Venus has gravity very similar to Earth.
@TheKrossbowman
@TheKrossbowman 9 лет назад
Doesn't Venus have acid clouds and perpetual pyroclastic flow on it?
@Cooliotso

Dano Ranon Yes, it does, but with some protective coatings covering the habitat in the upper atmosphere, a floating colony could technically be maintained.
@Woot831
@Woot831 9 лет назад
I'm inclined to say a floating colony would work better with Jupiter or Saturn, where a system could be set up to harness the hydrogen in their atmosphere to power fuel cells, and thus the colony. But then, of course, they have their own problem: gravity.

@trygveplaustrum4634
@trygveplaustrum4634 9 лет назад
I could argue both sides. Because the Earth's center of mass is slightly off of its axis of rotation, there is a tidal-lock effect. However, the tidal-lock effect happens towards whatever gravitational force pulls it, most notably the Sun. I'd say that the Earth is mostly tidal-locked on the Sun, but partially tidal-locked on the Moon (due to the Moon's large relative size). I am a layman, though, and I could be wrong.

The earth should not be moving across the sky of the moon at 3:17. If you are standing on one specific location on the moon, looking up in the sky at the earth, the earth would stand still because the moon is gravitationally locked. One day-night cycle on the moon is as long as its orbital period around the earth, and, from the moon's point of view, the earth will appear unmovable in the sky.
@abdul123r
@abdul123r 9 лет назад
Well considering that from 3:17 to 3:27 was 29 earth days, I'd say that it didn't really move too much..
@TheThrivingTherapsid
@TheThrivingTherapsid 9 лет назад
abdul123r That may be true. The earth is not rising that many degrees from its initial position. On the Wikipedia page about the moon, there is a short clip of the moon's phases, going from dark, to bright to dark again. And it can there be seen that the moon wobbles slightly as time passes.

@FlyntofRWBY
@FlyntofRWBY 9 лет назад
You realize the moon's axis to the earth is about 5 degrees, right? Over the course of 29 days it will slightly tilt back and forth by 5 degrees making it seem like the earth was going up and down. Also, if you pay attention, the earth starts moving downwards just before the sun comes into view.

Hold on just a second: isn't the biggest problem with solar power the fact that it only works in the day? So why haven't we put solar panels on those parts of the moon that are in the sun 80% of the time? Give a way to get it back to earth, and power shouldn't be a problem after wards.

You could build a huge satalite array with three geostationary one which "beam" the focused sunlight or in a other form of energy down to earth and the huge collectors that sends their energy to the stationary transmitters. Would be an option. But since nobody has that much money to spare for a project that produces "clean" energy, this just stays a dream.
