For anyone wondering about that number, 2,147,483.647 km is precisely 2^31-1 meters. They were measuring distance with a signed 32 bit integer, and this is the highest it goes.
I think the reason it doesn't roll over is because they probably made it so it only updates if the value is more than the previous frame, to prevent scores under 0 from being registered since it can fly the wrong way

The number 2,147,483,647 (or hexadecimal 7FFF,FFFF16) is the maximum positive value for a 32-bit signed binary integer in computing. It is therefore the maximum value for variables declared as integers (e.g., as int) in many programming languages, and the maximum possible score, money, etc. for many video games. The appearance of the number often reflects an error, overflow condition, or missing value This is why it doesnt go further. This number has also happened on a game I play.
CS major here. That max distance is actually the max length of the integer data type divided by 1000. They probably used an int for the distance and divided it by 1000 to get the three decimal places:)
I'm impressed the developers bothered to put in an overflow check. Normally if you add 1 to the maximum integer value it flips the sign bit. In this case (2^31 - 1) + 1 == -2^31. So they did at least some preventative measures for this type of stupidity. Edit: Thinking about it more, they probably store the actual position as a floating point double then cast it to a 32 bit integer for graphical display. Which would prevent overflow. So if you really want to break the game you'll need to launch it over 9007199254740991 (or 2^53 - 1) meters.

the reason it is stuck at that very specific number for max distance at 2:57 is because in computer programming, the maximum positive value for a binary integer is 2,147,483,647. Computers cannot physically process larger integers than that (although they can deal with larger floating point and double numbers)

2,147,483.647 is the highest number that can be stored by 32-bits. Similarly 2.147,483,647 takes the same amount of space, no matter the precision this is the peak that can be stored. This is the same issue that arose from reaching level 256 in pacman. I can only assume the game freaking out is akin to the integer overflow in that the game is trying to reach out of it's memory space, so this is returning a null value as opposed to older games / systems without such overflow protection, this would by why the game doesn't straight up crash as handling a null value is freaky, but still more managable than modifying data unrelated to the memory space.
