A simple explanation for an often asked question, "what are canvas rugs" can be discovered in this short video. Laurel explains the materials and the processes to better understand the durability and creative option of canvas rugs for interior decor.

I used to SEW my hem... now I use Industrial Carpet Tape...

how well does the industrial carpet tape work? I'm about to start my first one and I was going to sew the hem but taping it sounds a little easier with the size.

How do you get them to lay flat and absolutely flush with the floor? The edges would drive me insane visually, but as someone who has sustained a head injury tripping on such issues with a rug, I'd worry it was also a safety hazard.

Hello Lynette, I use a putty tack to fasten the canvas rugs to the floor. They do NOT slide around. In fact, I've been making bathroom rugs for a non-slip option in the bathroom.

I love your rugs. Please tell me if you varnish the entire back as well as the hem. I dont want to over do it.

Hello Sherry, DO NOT VARNISH THE BACK. I paint the back and the hem on the back with exterior latex house paint. bit if you varnish the back the whole thing will crack. I started painting the back to protect from mold in low-land tropical rain forest. It still manages to stay flexible. Varnishing will make it too stiff and prone to cracking. varnish the top, seal with paint on the back.

Absolutely, Julie. For shipping purposes, we roll them around PVC tubes and never have we had a complaint. Thanks for your comment and question.

They won't crack if you roll them. They can't be folded.

Do you have to paint them? Can you just leave the canvas and spray them with the shoe water protection spray? Asking because I want to make a simple one to use in my apartment hallway.

Are you asking if you can use the spray instead of varnish? I don't know. I have only ever used polyurethane both water-based and oil-based with at least four coats to protect the paint. It makes the rugs very durable. I always say try a small one to test and see how it goes.

will that top coat make the rug yellow?

Hi Susan. Thanks for your question...answer simply is a resounding, "NOPE" to yellowing. There are rugs we have made that are over 7 years old and no yellowing has occurred. TIP: rugs should not be placed directly in the sun.

These rugs can be used outside.

Toni I don't recommend these for outdoor use. they are canvas after all. and the varnish heats up and can get smelly. People do use them on covered porches where they may get some sun and some rain but not full exposure. I have had clients who used them outside, around the pool area. How they lasted with that treatment I can't say!
