I grew up using DEET, it works, but it ruined gear. Since then for years I've used nothing and just suffered. Mosquitos and chiggers love me, ticks not so much. I am definitely going to give the Picaridin a try.

I've been using Bens 100% deet. It works great, instantly repels bugs. I'll try the picaridin, seems like having a lotion would be a good idea. Thanks for the tip.

Sawyer Picaridin is the ONLY thing we use for topical applications. It is the best! We recommend this to everyone on our channel. We treat our clothes with Pymetherin and between the 2, we are usually 99.9% free of bug issues and ticks!

Two things: 1. I just picked up a bottle of the Sawyer Picaridin Lotion last night. 2. I am very happy that you conducted this review! I don't live in the back countries or go camping a lot, but I am primarily a night time photographer, and I am in different types of environments; ALL have mosquitoes, some have chiggers and ticks. After seemingly have exhausted every brand of aerosol spray mosquito repellent, only to find that my pockets were once again emptied out on a useless product I decided to do more research. The lesson you have in your review video I've never heard of that brand, yet I went to product reviews and people could not stop speaking good about it! I'm looking forward to testing it out later on this evening on a night shoot!

@adibee88
@adibee88 4 года назад
@@D1amondeyes No kidding, all three products worked RIDICULOUSLY well! The Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Spray is the "weakest". By this statement I mean I had to reapply the spray after 4 and 1/2 hours of being outside, taking shots in the dark, right around the dismal swamp! So the weakest of my three sprays is still stronger than any aerosol repellent that I've ever used! The sawyers repellant that you apply on the clothes is definitely a five-star product, along with their lotion repellent application! I honestly don't know why Sawyer's isn't advertised a lot more than the other commercial aerosol brands that are weaker! 👍 Before I go out shooting photography, every night I have had one of the three products and have had zero problems ever since! 👍

I found your video because I wanted to know how to pronounce picaridin. I’m still not fully sold on your pronunciation but I like it! And I love this product. I got it after getting Lyme disease earlier this year. And the main symptom of Lyme, for me, was for pain. So I was pretty motivated to not get Lyme again. I was surprised how much this helped with all insects that like to bite. I feel like I can wear shorts and short sleeves again which is so nice

I sleep about 6 - 10 hours, I noticed that with Deet it seems to last all night long before mosquitos attack me again. I gotta test this stuff out, but I expect it to last no more than 9 hours. 14 hours may be the max and so they were probably able to put it on the label similar to how with food if it's 70%+ organic it can actually be labeled organic (do not go through google, just get a job in agriculture, food science, food chemistry, dietetics or food production if you wanna know the actual truth), the "95%" was made to make the public feel better about purchasing organic foods, but yeah, sorry to burst the bubble of any organic food fans out there, but I digress. Still tho, 8 - 9 hours is a solid amount of time, enough to convince me to start using it.

Brand names are not important, it's the percentage of deet. 98% or more repels the mosquitos or black flies no matter how thick they are. It varies depending on where you are and those natural repellents don't work when the mosquitos are real bad. My wife and I were on a fishing trip up in Canada a few years ago and the mosquitos were bigger, thicker and more aggressive than I ever thought possible. 98% deet was the only thing that stopped them. Some people told me that 30% deet worked as well.

I've used the Sawyer stuff and even their Family stuff, which, ironically, I think does have something like 20% Deet in that lotion (my wife and I were careful to apply it to them ourselves and kept it off their hands) and found it to be pretty good. We've also been using the Natrapel stuff lately, which also uses Picaridin, and have found it to be effective enough. I was worried how bad the mosquitos were going to be going up to Allsop, but was pleasantly surprised to find that only a couple would bother me at any one time. There were never any swarms of them as I've experienced at places like Ruth Lake, Wall Lake, etc...(I think the majority of mosquitos know where there are more crowds of people and like to hang out with them there...j/k). But seriously, I'm not sure if it was the pemethrin treatment I did on my clothing prior to that trip, or what, but I never was bothered enough to pull out my small bottle of Natrapel or my headnet on that Allsop trip.

@MooTaters
@MooTaters 6 лет назад
Can't speak for their lotion, but I can for their pump spray, and you missed what I found to be one of the biggest pluses of all...other than the fact that it works well(in my experience picaridin products have worked loads better than any DEET product). It doesn't stink, whenever I used the pump spray I could smell it when it came out and was settling on the skin, but probably less than a minute and any scent from it was gone. When I no longer found it at our target(always had the lowest price) I opted for REPEL's Lemon Eucalyptus spray, and while it doesn't have as bad of a smell as DEET, it certainly doesn't smell good to me, and continues to stink for hours on end(nose seems incapable of ignoring it after a while, like it would other obnoxious scents). Not good when you're looking for brief protection of an absolute maximum of maybe 3 hours(more likely 2 or less).
@robpelton
@robpelton 6 лет назад
MooTaters do you find that this soaks in to the skin like a typical lotion?
@MooTaters
@MooTaters 6 лет назад
As I said can't speak for the lotion, but if you're asking about the pump spray, I'd say it dries like most sprays. There is a noticeable layer with the spray, though I wouldn't say it's obnoxious in that way...just that if you pay attention you will see and possibly feel the difference. Emphasis on possibly as in my experience you have to be focusing on it to realize it, or have put a lot on. The spray hasn't ever felt greasy though, which was one of my fears of the lotion and I am usually only going for 1-4 hours of protection tops.

Permethrin is the best. Harmless for fabrics and humans. You put it on clothes and it survives multiple washes. Or 70 washes if you send it in to insect guard to get applied

@SawyerProducts
@SawyerProducts 5 лет назад
@@BackcountryExposure FYI we actually recommend applying the sunscreen first. The trick to a comfortable and effective application of sunscreen is to put it on at least 10 minutes before sun exposure. This will allow ample time for the sunscreen to fully absorb into the skin before your body gets warm out and about in the sun. Once the sunscreen has dried, you can apply the insect repellent. Sprays are often most convenient but a nice comfortable topical insect repellent lotion will typically last longer and also be more resilient to swimming and other active use. Our SPF 30 is a very breathable and long lasting formula that pairs better with insect repellent than most other sunscreens on the market. You can learn more about the Sawyer Sunscreen Difference at sawyer.com/sunscreen/

25% DEET works for about 6-8 hours against the Aedes aegypti which causes dengue. But can still depend on the type of human skin it was applied to. I swear by the efficacy of DEET. Picaridin and IR3535, not so much. But still it may depend on the base used in the formulatiom of the product.
