What Is A Blues Breaker Guitar Pedal?

Today I explore the history and legend of the Bluesbreaker amp and subsequent pedals. From the early 60s when Eric Clapton needed an amp that would fit in the "boot" of his car, to the modern pedals based on the pedal based on the amp, this rabbit hole goes deep. In the comments below let me know your favorite jam we did, if you'd like to see future episode comparing Bluesbreaker based pedals, and an artist you love who plays or has played a JTM 45 or Bluesbreaker pedal.

Hey dipshits, why don't you release your old pedals again? Build them in China, bring down the price. People are leaving you behind. Same with your amps: Make a low watt, Chinese made, version of the JTM 45. You're going to get left behind if you don't get your shit together. Already traded my old Marshalls for new Orange, Victory, and Blackstar amps.

I worked for marshall in 1991 so if you have an original Blues Breaker, Shredmaster, or Drive Master it stands a 33% chance of having my test signature on the PCB. So I have one of the first ever Shredmasters & it remains one of my favourite ever distortion pedals to this day. As a metal head the purpose of the Blues Breaker was entirely lost on me X-D

I've been digging going through the catalog of JHS Shows so much, and this episode was just phenomenal. The history & insights are always brilliant but the jams Josh and the boys lay down are priceless-they give context to what the pedals in the spotlight sound like in a real world musical situation AND they just kick ass. That last riff & groove could absolutely be expanded into a full song with melody, lyrics, etc. It's so refreshing to hear original musical bits instead of 12 bar clichés. Keep doing work JHS...the entire team is on fire.

I have one of those Marshall Bluesbreaker pedals and it is simply amazing! I got it at a garage sale back in the day for like $20. Just like I got one of the original long dash DS-1’s with the clear switch and a very very low serial number that dates it to 1978 at a garage sale in the mid 80’s for $20. It sounds amazing and nothing like a regular DS-1. Both pedals are amazing!

that Snouse though.....ridiculously similar to the original Bluesbreaker, then the presence knob to add a little brilliance. Thank you for this video. I convinced myself I need the Analogman King of Tone because, well no explanation needed, it's the King of Tone pun intended. But this video provided me with so many other good alternatives and helped me discover the Snouse. I actually already have a Morning Glory V4 and thought I needed the King of Tone because it's such a unicorn pedal, no where near the unicorn level of the original Klon, but everyone still wants one. Idk what magic potion they're drinking at Snouse but the did such a good job in replicating the tone from the original Marshall Black Box Bluesbreaker, and the added brilliance feature really gives it the Marshall feel. I also respect you Josh, for not trying to only market JHS pedals and really pay your respects to other pedal companies, I take my hat off to you for that. Your unbiased view on effects and tone is what keeps me watching your vlogs and actually makes me want to buy more JHS pedals. Good job, keep doing what you're doing man! LOL and the end the "What If everything we are is a Bluesbreaker? *crashes from being mind blown*". You have my subscription.

In a way, I find these "in the band context" comparisons to be a lot more useful. I find myself loving specific pedal sounds when demoed only to not care for them in certain contexts. You have the guitar and amp which make a difference, but also it can be hard to understand how a sound will actually sound in the mix of the rest of the instruments when you're only listening to the guitar. It's fun to listen to guitar only and hear all the details, but I think putting it in a mix is more useful. Of course, it's also a lot more work to record, which is probably why we don't see this often with pedal demos. So thanks. I like these. Keep it up!

I'm using the Charlie Brown more often than the MG these days, it really does the low-gain thing better than most other high-gain JTM "distortion" pedals. It likes my modern-style (kinda bright) Duncan-Designed humbuggies as well. For high-gain JTM/Plexi stuff I'm using either a Jetter Gain Stage Black (AC/DC in box, no BS) or Greer Amps Little Samson.

I'm curious: When you talk about "pedal topology", I'm curious just what you mean? Do you mean that the circuit is literally identical, but part values and chips are swapped out? Do you mean that the circuit is similar, but with other parts and minor mods to the circuit to make those parts work? Or do you mean something else? Or all of the above?
@josiahlee1982
@josiahlee1982 4 года назад
Topology describes the layout. Like 1 transistor, 2, 3, 4, etc. where the clipping stage is. It’s not exact for example the d*a*m* meathead is a 1 knob fuzz face topology. 2 transistor gain stages, no clipping diodes. Electra topology would be 1 transistor and diodes. It’s a rough reference and can encompass a lot. It’s not breaking down exact values just the general layout as different transistors need different biasing resistance values etc.

My Randall RB500 and Marshall DBS7215 is my Bluesbreaker. The Bluesbreaker amp was actually the Marshall JTM45 combo used by Eric Calpton when he played in John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, hence the name Bluesbreaker. The Marshall was based on the Fender Bassman, a bass amp that guitarist loved to use. So actually the JTM45 is a bass amp...which makes Clapton a bassplayer. And makes the Bluesbreaker pedal and based on pedals all bassplayer pedals...and all guitarplayers who use them realy wannabe bassplayers...aren't all guitarplayers just wannabe bassplayers...and....and....and.... The real meaning of life is, are you or aren't you a bassplayer and nothing else matters. To be or not to be a bassplayer. To B or not to B. 5 string or no 5 string.... @jhspedals this is all your fault.

actually my amp tech changed the tubes in my 1987 JCM800 which I bought 30y ago because It sounded just like the JTM45 reissue, which they had just brought out, and made it sound like a cranked bluesbreaker amp at reasonable volume, but that was just too distorted and not dynamic enough for me back then, wonder if the Charlie Brown is going to give me that Hendrix-style tone I loved since then

The Expandora is basically 2 Proco Rats in a box. I love it. I do not like the Kilt because it is to refined. Nothing wrong with it as a dirt pedal ...it just looses that tear your face quality of the Expandora! Great idea for a show Pat!

Follow-up question......is the dirty scratchy lead tone that John uses on songs like Gravity or Belief (outro solo that begins around 4:15 on the CD) on Where The Light Is DVD a Bluesbreaker pedal and can I get that tone from a Charlie Brown ? It's a crazy good tone, and really unique.

Another super nice video! I like to think when I play blues, I am a bluesbreaker. But maybe that's because I'm regularly playing along to a copy of that very special John Mayall record my parents gave to me. They've bought it back in the days and it's an irreplaceable treasure to me. Thank you JHS for doing this video.

JHS makes solid stuff. King of Tone is however a really special circuit. It’s my most important pedal along with my Maxon PH-350 Phaser. Everybody should have at least one JHS pedal though....mine is the Pulp n Peel. Paired with some of the wonderful modern delays that Strymon etc are doing, anything you are missing in the “it almost sounds like tape” realm is elevated from that orange squeezer circuit into virtually sounding like tape. It’s very musical. I prefer it to the Cali even.

Have you ever broken down Hendrix’s Marshall amp?I know PRS took one head and dialed in a new creation and are asking over 4 grand. I think Marshall has tried to reissue a hand wired Marshall , chasing Jimi’s live tone. What is out there today that can recreate his electric tone that won’t break the bank? Really always enjoy your work. It’s obvious you do what you love. Much love and appreciation. Just another lead guitar player from Texas✌🏻

If you’re talking about Clapton, there is no picture of him using a treble booster. He says he never used one. The engineer says he never used one. It’s a myth he used one. The Beano record sound is a Les Paul with PAF’s into a dimed Blues Breaker amp. It’s inaccurately documented that he used a range master or fuzz at different points. Straight to amp.
