What is the climax of a story? What are some examples of climaxes in literature? Why are climaxes important in literary essays?
In this short lesson, Professor Raymond Malewitz answers these questions through an extended reading of Yiyun Li's "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers." The video is designed to help high school and college English students identify and analyze climaxes within and beyond their literature classes.

Thank you for wonderful literary, educational channel. As I said before I am Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American RU-vid channels. I love to read and write because both are great ways to improve our English as none native speakers. Climax definition is most intense moments Within story , making turning point for protagonist as they confront. Climax can be also used as stylistic device by increasing importance of words , in pharse or sentences. For example climax of story when conflict plot is resolved.

Climax ( Greek ladder ) in dramatic and non dramatic fiction, point at which highest level of interest and emotional response is achieved. In rhetoric climax is achieved by arrangement of unity of meaning ( words , pharse , clauses , sentences). Structure of play climax or crisis is decisive moment or turning point . Pyramidal of five act dramatic structures advanced by German playwright Gustav fregtag in Dietechnik des drama ( 1863) . Climax in sense of crisis occurs close to conclusion of third act . By end of 19 th century when traditional act drama was abandoned in favor of three acts , both crisis and emotional climax were placed lose to end of play . Every story have climax without climax story is just series of events. Thank you for your wonderful educational literary channel.

Nice work here, Khatoon! For another famous take on why stories need climaxes, check out Frank Kermode's classic work of literary criticism "The Sense of an Ending."
