Same wtf, I thought this video was a joke at first. I have never slept without one and know no one that does. It is actually really gross because you are not supposed to wash your duvet, at least not often. So all your sweat and dirt gets into the duvet. And also, duvet covers are much easier to wash and dry. And it is cheaper to buy one duvet and a few covers. Because if you have a duvet of good quality it is very expensive.
@@salmon1290 Maybe it depends on location or how you were raised. I'm 44,growing up we had bedspreads. A very thin decorative blanket that went on top of sheets and blankets. My entire adult life I've bought bed sets. Fitted and flat sheet, comforter, pillow cases and curtains. I've never even seen a duvet in real life.
@@robiendenhollander6333 Right? It's incredibly unhygienic to sleep directly against the duvet. Plus if she washed the duvet itself as often as you should wash the duvet covers (once per week) then it would be destroyed pretty quickly.
cannot believe there are people out there who haven't experienced the good vibes of changing the entire colour scheme of your room just by switching out the duvet cover
Literally, I have a collection, 4 seasons duvet cover sets, various colors and fabrics, even some for the holidays😅 aren’t ppl buying duvet cover sets with matching pillow cases and at times bedsheets?? 😮 I’m culturally shocked!
Ok cus I live in Scotland (even though I’m italian) and in Italy and scotland duvet covers are standard, I didn’t even know some people didn’t use them 😭
I'm a mexican living i the UK and I didn't know this shit even existed haha I've never in my life needed a duvet cover until I came to the UK, things are very very different
Just info The bed sheet is a fitted sheet, Flat sheets go between you and the comforter. If you get an expensive comforter like one with down, it can be expensive to get dry cleaned or be hard to wash if it doesn't fit in the washing machine. With the sheet or duvet between you and the comforter, you only have to wash the cover and sheets frequently. Also, standard pillows are like 28 inches long, queen pillows are 30, king size pillows are 36, and body pillows are about 54. I used to work retail where I stocked bedding
In the UK we have flat sheets as well but just use them as a more inconvenient fitted sheet, I have never understand why anyone buys them. It makes sense that you guys are putting it between yourself and the comforter.
@@ijustwannacommentnotmyreal9814 we just use bed sheets 😆and blanket. Sometime we don't even use blanket at night when it's hot since it's gonna be very uncomfortable to sleep in😅

Waitwaitwait you've been washing your whole entire duvet *every time*? How long does it take to dry oh my god? Also, a much easier way to put on a duvet cover is to turn the cover inside-out, with your hands in the top corners, and use those corners to grab the corresponding corners on the duvet itself, then you gotta sorta shake the cover right-ways-out onto the duvet. You'll have to stuff the bottom corners of the duvet into their corners at the bottom of the cover, and then grab them and shake the stuffing back up the duvet to ensure everything fits properly, but it'll sure as he'll be a damn sight easier than whatever the hell you were trying.
washing a comforter is pretty easy it’s just like any other clothes in the washer and dryer. for some people it’s just easier instead of taking apart the duvet every time
I think we just have thicker duvets than most places. My duvet literally wouldn't fit in the washing machine and would take yearssss to dry. Literally everybody has duvet covers here and I've never heard the word comforter lol. Guess we're all learning 🤷♀️
I always grab the corners and dive inside the cover lol My dad used to zip me up and try to make the bed with me inside, I never learned how to do it properly 🤣
@@GillyFromPhilly nope. The duvet cover is the cover. This is what Google said about the difference between a duvet and a comforter. "First off, a comforter is made to be used as is - it's one complete, quilted piece. A duvet, on the other hand, is meant to be used with a duvet cover, coverlet, or top quilt. This makes a comforter a bit easier to use, but duvets are easier to clean."
In the uk we call a comforter a duvet so that's why it's called a duvet cover and we always have a duvet cover on because there's normally nice patterns on them and it can decorate your room xx
same in canada but comforters aren’t the same as a duvet. duvets are like a ranch version of a comforter. comforters don’t come with covers. it’s just a fluffy thicker blanket while duvets are more high end and come with loops on the corners to change the top layer while comforters don’t
I always learned you had a mattress pad, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, then blankets, and pillow cases. I never really used duvets at all because I never really used a comforter, I generally use a bunch of smaller blankets because I don't actually have a comforter. My grandmother also used to have bed skirts to hide her bedframe.
I think duvets are a rich person thing in the US… growing up we always got the comforter sets with the comforter, pillow cases, sometime it came with sheets and throw pillows and a bed skirt. They were always a good deal like $50 for all that and they were usually softer than the cheapest stuff bought separately…. It was rare to see a set with a duvet included
that's so weird for me, because i live in South Africa, and here a duvet cover is the norm. few people know about comforters and it's usually only the rich people who have them
In Australia you get the duvet cover with matching pillows, and sometimes even matching sheets for reasonable costs. If I had to sleep under a naked duvet I’d puke lmao.
I only know of it cause I have relatives overseas who sent us bed sets (comforter, top sheet, fitted sheet, and pillow case), but I’ve only ever used the whole thing when we got an A/C. Maybe because it’s hot and it doesn’t get too cold, and that most of us only have fans at home as opposed to an A/C or a centralized home so it’s more common to just have a thin blanket.
Y’all’s bedding is too heavy for majority of the states. It’s like 39° c today with an overnight of 22°c where I live in California, and it’s not even officially summer yet. I slept with the air conditioner on all night last night and only a sheet over me. In a few weeks our overnight lows won’t get below 25°c.
@@wesleywright6458 In summer where I live we get similar temps below 20 at night is rare. It just also gets a looot colder in winter, about -15 to -5 depending on the year. that's why we use duvets in winter and no blanket or just duvet Covers in summer. I still prefer flat sheets w/ a comforter tbh. I live in a really hot part of the US but I like being fully covered while I sleep. You can’t really change the warmth in a duvet but, with a flat sheet, you can choose between sleeping with just the sheet or the sheet and comforter. Plus, fitted sheets, pillow cases, and flat sheets are often sold in sets here anyways

Thankyou! I've tried teaching my kids (and husband....) that this is the easiest way to do it, but thats obviously waaay too complicated meaning I'm the one who has to change the duvets all the time.
Yes! I thought thats how everyone put them on and also thought duvet covers (we call then doona covers in Australia) were standard. I've never not had a dooma cover on my bed.
I spent $150 on some kind of German duvet cover I thought I was a whole set with sheets lol but no just a cover with pillowcases I still love it! So good for winter in Canada 🥶
Hi! I am from England and I can’t believe u haven’t heard of a duvet cover!! It is soooo comfortable! It can be uncomfortable on ur first night bc it’s brand new u just need to get used to it then it will feel so relaxing Edit: OMG! Ty for the likes this is the most I have ever gotten!!
I genuinely just thought everyone had a duvet cover cause it’s what everyone in my whole family uses (my mum’s from England along with her family) so it was so shocking to know not everyone uses a duvet cover
Same here, but I can see why sleeping without one would actually be comfortable too. The duvet itself is very silky and soft - way too susceptible to stains though and often don't look that great, hence the duvet cover haha.
I just discovered a duvet cover too and now I don't have to wash my comforter so much, just the cover. A trick is to put the cover inside out on the bed and lay the comforter on top. Now roll it like a burrito. At the end, take the end and flip it over and now unroll and fluff it out. Soo much easier
comforters are thick and used for lots of warmth usually having some kind of design on it, they do not need covers (but you can use one ig if u want a diff design) quilts are less thick but you can get different types (i have a thin bamboo one so its a lot cooler) and they go in the covers which will have the colour/design on it. coverlets are like comforters but a lot thinner, even cooler/thinner than a quilt and do not go in covers at all they will have a design/colour on it. this is how it is in australia anyway, my bad if they mean something else in america or other countries
Yeah, I like to sleep wrapped up like a burrito, because I find that when I sleep with a comforter and a sheet, I get cold way easier, and I like to be nice and warm at night
Same here, I just got this warm fluffy blanket for my bed recently and I love it on cold nights. I tossed my comforter after that, cause the blanket was always warm, whereas my comforter was cold until my body heat warmed it up
Ikr 😆 I was thinking how would one ever sleep like this in a tropical climate. Also, I don't think they use those hotdog shaped long pillows. It is called kolbalish in Bengali and I use two of them 😅
Have you been to the mountains or hilly places? We got a whole subcontinent as a country. A comforter is not even close to being enough to keep you warm enough to sleep in those places
As a person who sleeps with only a duvet cover bc I boil with a comforter in the summer (bc like 15c with a comforter? No thank u.) I just pile on the blankets in the winter 🤷🏽♀️
i dont have a duvet either 😭😭 and one time i tried to wash my comforter relizing its to heavy and hard to wash, i only figured that out when the washing machine gushed water out all over my floor and a little bit into the room next to it 😭

Comforters here in the US are meant to be used as is (no cover needed) and already come with patterns/designs. They are also pretty cheap around $20 - $40 and are lighter than duvet's so they can get machine washed weekly and be perfectly fine. Also here in the US people use the flat sheet underneath the comforter to sleep and that gets washed weekly.
I didn’t know what duvet covers were for the longest time. I also didn’t know the word comforter. I just called it a blanket. I guess it’s stuff parents are supposed to show us because my mom knew what they were but it was new info to me! I only learned like a year or two ago when I went to IKEA for the first time. It’s nice having one!
Little tip for the doona or duvet cover flip he cover inside out grap the corners and flip back it works so well As an Aussie doonas a like the centre price to a room love it though so cute❤
Duvets are different to comforters. Also a flat sheet is just a sheet with no elasticated corners. I usually see people in the US use a flat sheet under their comforters so they don't have to wash them so often, just the sheet. In the UK most of us use a fitted sheet (elastic corners,) on the mattress and a duvet, (different to a comforter,) in a duvet cover. The sheet and duvet cover gets washed every week. A duvet is light and airy inside because it traps air for warmth. Some are filled with feathers but most a synthetic or natural fibre filling. Their warmth is measured in "togs."
Thank you; the confusion in the video and comment section were driving me crazy. Comforters get paired with a flat sheet to protect them; duvets get paired with a duvet cover. Comforters and duvets are not the same thing.
I've grown up in the US, and I always have used a soft padded mattress cover under a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and a quilt. We have heavier, thicker quilts for the winter and a thinner cotton one for the summer. I wash the fitted and flat sheets with the pillowcases weekly and the quilts and mattress cover monthly. Never had a duvet, but I'd love to try one!
@@treelicker once you try one you'll never go back. You don't have to worry about the sheet getting separated from your comforter and tangled in your legs or anything like that. They are light because of the air in them so you can go up a few togs for winter but still keep the lightness.
@@treelicker I bought a duvet with a cover nice quality but to heavy and hot for the texas weather. It only came in handy when it snowed this year and last year.
Thank you for this. This is so interesting. As a Filipino, I only know bedsheet, pillowcase, and blanket😂 I've heard of duvet but I didn't know how it's different to comforter (a more familiar word used here). I most probably confused the two. It's like carbonara and spaghetti all over again. Like how the rest of the world has bolognese, marinara, puttanesca etc. but when served to a Filipino it all becomes "spaghetti"😂 and anything with white sauce is "carbonara"
An easier way to do it is if you can hang it over your stairs or hang it over a balcony and shake it. Obviously don’t let go but hold it by the corners and shake it and it will help you put the comforter in the duvet cover. Xx❤

Btw I recommend turning the cover for your blanket inside out, putting your hands like claws in the two corners of the shorter side, grabbing the edges of the blanket and shaking it in
Where are you from? I'm Malaysian. And honestly the only place I've seen a duvet is in a hotel. I don't know anyone who uses a duvet at home, most people use quilts or comforters
Spread the comforter on the floor/bed Turn the sheet insideout Get into the sheet grab the ends of your duvet with the ends of the sheet Pull the comforter into the sheet
No? Lol. I've only ever had like normal blankets, like fuzzy ones. Those are comfortable anyways. And when I have had comforters, we just wash it like normal. It's really not like a necessary thing IMO. I mean sure, it's nice but like eh 🤷♀️
as a british person who lives in canada, when i moved here i couldn’t find duvet covers anywhere, they don’t come with a set of sheets, so i thought they just don’t sell duvet covers here, i’ve had to wash my duvet each time i wash my sheets, it turns out they sell them on amazon or ikea but they’re definitely more expensive than i remember them being in the uk
There is an easy way to put your duvet cover on. My ma taught me when I was a kid. You flip the entire duvet cover inside out, then match up the corners on one end of the duvet to the corners of the inside out duvet cover. Then whilst holding the matched up corners in place, just flip the whole thing right side out again and you don’t need to worry about shaking it into place, it will all match up.
I have never had a duvet cover, and the video made me question getting one bc I am disabled and she said it is a hard workout.. but now I want one again after reading your comment lol
Just a tip. Turn the cover inside out put each hand in each corner and take the corners of the Duvet. Flip the cover around and shacke it till it's half way down then throw it on the bed and pull down the rest. With Twin siced Duvets you can easily shake it down completely but King sized is a bit more tricky
Tip turn the duvet cover inside out grab it from the inside at the points and then grab the duvet at its points while you are holding the duvet cover from the inside and then just put the duvet in(in europe this is like standard )
Australian's just fuckin wit us now- nah but fr thats kinda interesting how theres so many different ways to say different things like that, like between all the english speaking countries, theres still differences in ways we wouldnt have thought of~
Look up the burrito method for putting the duvet inside the comforter. It seems nonsensical at first, but it's a lot easier than just flinging the duvet around and hoping the corners match up eventually, lol. Also, you really need something to keep the mattress off the floor or you'll end up with a mouldy bottom mattress.
In Australia we have quilts and quilt covers, fitted sheets and flat sheets both cotton and flannelette. Most of us though just call whatever is on our bed that is not a sheet a blanket regardless of whether it's a quilt, a blanket, a comforter or a duvet (not even sure what the difference is between them all 🤔)
Me in the uk with my brains melting at the realisation that people don’t even use real duvets or duvet covers sometimes- (edit) mum i’m literally so famous
Some countries don't use duvet just bedsheets, pillows and blankets. Like ours becouse temperature is warm. We will be sweating he'll if we use duvets. The only 🛌 with duvet in our house is in one room where there's an air-conditioning.
@@rotisserie8444 when I say every household, I mean in the U.S. I live in California where it gets pretty hot but during the winters it can be pretty chilly. So...
I know what it is I just don’t use it cause it’s pointless buying another extra thing. And why buy it if it’s the same price as a duvet and I can get a comforter and I don’t have to buy the blanket and the top.
Idk if this will help anyone but I find this strategy really helpful: •Turn your duvet cover inside out. •Put your arms inside the duvet cover and grab the corners (at the end without buttons) •With your hands still in the corners of the inside out duvet cover, grab the corners of the duvet. •Keep hold of the corners and shake the duvet cover so it falls over the duvet and it turns the right way out. (Idk if that makes any sense but doing it this way helps me so much)
I’m pretty sure comforters having a duvet cover is optional, I mean that’s why comforters have patterns and aren’t just a plain colour. Duvet covers are for.. duvets. Like, goose down; Plain white weird fabric filled with feathers, that’s why you need a cover for it and that’s why it’s not really supposed to be washed, it messes with the feathers and they take forever to dry and are extremely heavy when wet. A comforter is just 2 pieces of fabric sewn together with some padding in between, definitely not a necessity to have a cover for it.
Exactly! My parents had one which I hadn’t realized until now. It was just a fancy big blanket to me, with the plain white stuffing on the inside, just like a pillowcase. All these people seem to think they should be covering their regular comforters, which are usually just filled with poly fiber batting, like a quilt. Imagine putting a cover over a quilt because you down want to wash it, so you never get to look at the design
Lol. I didn't either until I accidentally bought one, and I was telling my friend that it was so cheap. My friend had to explain that I have to put the comforter in the duvet cover. I thought I could use it as a blanket until it came in the mail, but now I like it and I can cover up old comforters with something cuter and more my style.
A similar thing happened to me lol! I saw one with a cute print and picked it out for Christmas and was super confused at first! I finally figured it out tho and the pink/white (mines reversible) looks so much nicer in my room than the dull green of my comforter!
Growing up I didn’t even have a bed, of course I don’t know what a duvet cover is… it’s crazy how people get shocked when others don’t know things that’s common to them. Do you really think everyone on the planet has the same experience as you?
Nah of course not but it still is a bit mindbogeling when you actually meet someone with such a different life experience that you dont even know to ask about differences. I had a flatmate whod lived for years in Germany at that point (but only with other Indians) and until she saw my bed had never ever thought to ask how we survive winter with low heating and without using 100 wool blankets to stay warm (the only kind of blanket she knew). After that she and her whole family got an education in blankets and bed sheets and the whole time we lived together we were much much conscious of the fact that something so fundamental for one of us might not be known to the other at all.
Fucking exactly, my family is poor as hell, barely gets enough money to buy groceries every month to the point where we had to eat only eggs every day for 3 weeks straight and we're just trying to survive and here these people are whining and disgusted that some people don't use a goddamn blanket cover like it's the end of the world. News flash people. Not. Everyone. Can. Afford. Nice. Things. You're just lucky
@@almond2954 I think it's because in most European countries duvet covers aren't really just a rich person thing. They can be cheap and more cost effective since you don't have to keep wasting washes on a whole duvet. We're not surprised because it's a luxury some folks can't afford. We're surprised because honestly most households in our countries know what a duvet cover is, even the poor ones. If there's luxury to come from our covers, it's dependent on the design or material used, not the very act of purchasing one. It's not said out of predudice AT ALL so chill
Ok so hack for anyone making their bed or putting pillow cases on pillows or duvet covers on duvets: put the pillow case or duvet cover inside out and put ur hands in it and grab the two furthest corners from u (the small side not the long side) then grap 2 sides of the duvet same size as the cover and then just flip the cover over it and around it and do up the buttons hope that made sense
@@sainaro2335 from what I've seen from other comments (I'm British so idk either) comforters are thinner and lighter than duvets. I grew up in Hawaii where it’s super warm so even though I knew about duvet covers I never used one because I mostly used top sheets or a thin blanket to sleep with, both you wash at the same times as your sheets so no reason to have a cover. Sometimes I would have a comforter but it was just for looks and I’d take it off the bed before sleeping…. It wasn’t until I moved to Alaska that I needed something thicker and got a duvet and duvet cover… so makes sense if you live in a warmer place to never have heard of it
Same, and as I still live in Hawaii we don't really need such thick blankets, I mean maybe if you have your ac blasting all day but considering electric bills it's just a fan. Comforters are really more for the aesthetic and that's it, because even our coldest nights aren't that cold enough to warrant one, like a long sleeve and socks will do. 😂
I'm too late but hopes this helps. maybe try a thicker comforter so it would fit perfect. When u get used to it, it will be SOOO comfortable!! Hope you try it

Then also grab the matching corners of the blanket and wriggle the fabric of your arms onto the blanket. Way easier, no jumping and no getting inside the duvet cover.
Usually, people layer their beds with a flat sheet under the comforter/blanket. They sleep under the flat sheet (tucked in between the flat sheet and fitted sheet beneath it) which prevents them from touching the comforter. If you ever come to an American hotel, you’ll see the same setup! Flat sheet under the comforter, and usually a quilt or throw blanket on top of the comforter.
