What is a fume board, and how is it used on honey supers.

Well folks, it's that time of year again, time for the bees to pay their rent. That's right, it honey harvest time. Our major nectar flow, Chinese Tallow, is over, and I'm just itching to see just how well our girls did while the flow was in full swing. I will admit, I did go out a few times to take a peek, and it looked promising, but as the saying goes, the proof is in the pulling.
On this adventure I had the invaluable assistance from Good Time Charlie, another member from our River Region Bee Club. For almost 3 days, Charlie and I fought the heat and humidity of Louisiana's sweltering summer, but still managed to bring in over 60 boxes full of the liquid gold from our 7 bee yards, including the ones at the abbey.
Besides the help of a little smoke, and the hive lifter, we broke out the big guns of the fume boards to help in the task of taking in our honey supers. Because I do not use excluders in our hives, an added step was necessary, checking for brood in the honey supers. Out of the 60 plus hives we checked, there were only 6 or 7 that the queen had stated laying in our honey super. The frames that did have brood on them were swapped out with honey frames from the second box, a very simple method that works with my style of bee keeping. There were also 2 or 3 of them that the queen had laid in, but they were back filled with honey and capped.
I can imagine that you are as anxious as me to find out how we did, so without further delay, let's get this thing started. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

I’m making you some new fume boards that don’t need any of that expensive repellent. I’m making them out of old seat cushions from the DMV. They should run out bees, beetles and anything else hiding in your honey boxes. Just don’t leave them on too long or you’ll think you’re pulling goldenrod honey.

Those must be the only type fume boards that work on your hives. Your bees are so tough from living in those boxes you give them, if you did not have the seat cushion fume boards, you'd need to use a crow bar to get the bees off their honey supers. Sometimes it pays to have good equipment, you don't have to use extreme measures to pull honey supers. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

I strongly recommend waxing bee boxes, they hold up well, AND they look great! The shelters were another experiment I did 2 years ago, and they are panning out very well. I have Chinese Tallow trees in my yard, and of course, in the surrounding area. I am a new beekeeper and was surprised that this tree is the major source of nectar for bees in Louisiana. With the state and USDA working on an eradication program for the tree, I am wondering just how long we will have this resource. It is a shame, but what can beekeepers do when they are going against the multi billion dollar timber industry? Great honey for the time being Jeff. Take care.
@timan2039
@timan2039 5 лет назад
To be fair the Tallow trees are a foreign invasive and best done away with. I live in Florida and we are dealing with all sorts of invasive species. From the Tallow, Boa constrictors, Iguanas, Water Monitors (huge lizard) and many other plants and critters, even the marine reefs are infested with Lion Fish. I would think that alternatives could be found.

Ask ANY bee keeper and they will tell you, the small hive beetle is the scourge of bee keepers due to the fact they can wipe out a healthy colony in a matter of days. Plain and simple, they have to die, and yes, I derive great pleasure in ridding my hives of them before they can inflict their personal carnage. 1. Why is the honey always in the 3rd of 4 boxes? I assume brood makes up the other boxes like you showed in the box on top. 2. What were the beetles doing in the hive? They looked like lady bug type beetles. Do bees kill them? I really enjoy watching and learning.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 лет назад
The 3rd and 4th boxes will always be honey as the queen will only lay in the bottom 2 boxes as long as there is a line of honey preventing her from crossing over into the upper boxes. Hive beetles are the scourge of bee keepers, they will kill a strong hive if their numbers are large enough. The beetles seek out hives to lay their eggs in to perpetuate their species. Personally, I'd like to wipe out the species. The bees do not kill them, but they do corral them so as to deep them away from their comb. I'm happy to hear you enjoy the channel, thanks for watching. Obviously duct tape doesn't work so well to patch a veil. Have you tried darning it? I am not a bee keeper but I have darned holes in window screens before, it works quite well. You just weave the thread in and out through the mesh, kind of like stringing a shoe. That works well for slits in the mesh. For larger holes, try patching it with a bit of lace or other mesh like fabric. These patches may not look perfect, but they are more permanent and see-through than duct tape.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 лет назад
Thank you so much for your suggestion Julie, darning would work, I have done it before. The truth is, the material the veil is made of is to old, the stitching would just tear more material....but not duct tape. Good Morning Mr. Ed! You are such a gentle person with the banana spider. But will he come back and set up shop again? :-) Hope you and your family had an awesome 4th of July and thanks for educating us on the life of bees. By the way, are the beetles trying to eat the bees or are they there for the honey? Do you only find them on the surface or do they get all the way down into the container? (I should know the correct term for the "container..." :-| )
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 лет назад
The spider may come back, but it will just get evicted again. They are very common here in Louisiana. My 4th was wonderful, we bottled honey all day. This Saturday, the 13th, we will have our honey go on sale in the Gift Shop here at the abbey. There is a very big demand for it, and we bottled over 800 bottles of the liquid gold. The beetles are mainly looking for a place to lay their eggs, but in doing so, they destroy the colony. I hate those critters. The bees will coral the beetles to a certain spot in the hive, and that way they can keep them from laying in the comb. Good questions, and it's alway a pleasure to hear from you. God's peace LD.
