I first encountered holdfasts when I was 12 years old in wood shop in elementary school in 1970. When I realize it was 50 years ago it makes me feel old. I finally have a decent workshop at home so I built a Roubo bench this time and bought a couple of hand forged holdfasts from a blacksmith in New Mexico who sells them on Amazon. I love holdfasts. I use them constantly exactly was you described. Very good video by the way. They also are good for holding a piece to a bench hook if you need extra holding power and for locking a board against the side of the workbench in your deadman. I have a leg vise and have worked on a couple of doors in my house by holding one end in the leg vise and the other with the holdfast and deadman.

I have a very small workbench in a tiny workshop, it’s actually one of those cheap ones 'from Germany', it it’s German engineering I was on the moon landing. I've butched it up a bit with brackets on all the joints, angled wooden supports, backing behind my dog holes which which also adds weight and strength to the table, plane till underneath and shelves which also gave more strength to the legs. This also adds valuable storage space. It is now solid and has weight. My next purchase is a better traditional wood vice like the one on your old bench and making these two little wooden ones into a single end vice with more depth and width. When I do that I’m also going to put on another layer of plywood on top and an apron with dog holes. This would make a total of 2 3/4 inch deep. I can't build myself a new bench as I can’t lift that weight and don’t have enough range of movement. With the vice, when I buy, it I would have spent just short of £150 in total. I know could have built one cheaper if I was physically capable. However, I would still have to buy the vice and wheels etc. I am getting to holdfasts honest, I just needed to describe my bench to show why mine work on several levels. The dog holes are 12mm and I manage to buy two holdfasts from a company in Sheffield called Daegrad Tools. As far as I know he forges all his own products and they are very reasonable, about £20 for two. Even though they are tiny compared to yours they do work very well and have never let me down. I think he said you need twice the diameter of of the metal used to make the holdfasts in the depth of your dog holes in order for them to work. I’m at about 4 times the width as each hole is about 2” deep (can you tell I’m English mixing my measurements). They have never let me down and I think they are really useful for anyone like myself who only has a tiny bench and works on small projects. I would definitely butch up any bench, maybe not to the extent I have, but it has to be strong enough to take the extra wear and tear. If you don’t mind I will leave a link to the ones I bought, but please feel free to delete the entire comment if you rather not see links to products from the comments. I understand it can be the thin edge of the wedge. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F163578823626 I hope my rambling might be useful for a change.

Easy to make your own with 5/8" round bar. If the smoothness is a problem, work it over with your own hammer while you are at it. Flatten the end first, then bend with a torch using a length of pipe. You should be able to make 2 for 5 bucks.

Hi, James, I’ve been working on a bench design using some of the construction techniques and materials tha Rob Cosman uses in his MDF and plywood bench, with some modifications to make the legs flush with one edge of the bench. I’ve been struggling to figure out what type of vise, and which manufacturer, to purchase. This video solved my problem. I’m going to start out with a few holdfasts (Gramercy makes some from steel wire that are affordable and have a good reputation). These should allow me to build my bench and get started. I can figure out whether I even need a vise and, if so, which type I want later (and save up to buy a good one). I’m stoked! My bench is going to be a Thanksgiving weekend project! Really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. Thanks for clearing my mental logjam on this question. Stu

Thank you so much for the video. I was going to go get a mate to bend some 19mm steel for me and weld a flat piece on the tip. After watching your video I can see the point of having them hand forged. I only want to buy these once. I found some on etsy and am very happy to support a craftsman and spend a bit more now that I understand the value.

the other thing with hand forged is that the surface is somewhat pitted and pounded as it actually been forged into shape and that gives it a texture will hold in the hole and it wont want to wiggle back out, the other great thing about that is because it is a soft texture, it's not going to rip apart your holes so you can slide this in and out of your hole as much as you want and is not going to make the hole any bigger it works great for you these. this particular hold fast are from black bear forge if you want to see how he makes this duck build hold fast

Interesting. Thanks for a great and well presented video. I’m actually having difficulty with my holdfasts. I smack them down so they should hold the piece tight, but the piece moves. I noticed that the end of the holdfast touches with the tip, rather than with the flat part on the end. It’s a little frustrating to say the least and somewhat dangerous.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 4 года назад
Sounds like you might need to hit it down a little bit harder. They usually take a pretty good solid whack. But it could also be that the hold fast wasn't bent far enough. For being a simple device it really has a lot of intricacies to its angle and shape.

The screw hold fast ones are better no? Soft ends and more subtle? I'm new so just guessing but I will use them on my new bench bull on smaller stuff so a bit different uses I guess...
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 4 года назад
Different people like different things. If you're referring to the hold fast from veritas that have the screw on top to clamp it down rather than hitting it in place I am not a fan of those at all. Number one if you have a softwood bench they rip it apart and number two you really have to have an incredibly strong grip in order to crank them down and get a good stronghold and if you have to do that repeatedly it can really hurt your hand. But there are other people out there who really like them. You'll never know until you try.
@Jimbob-zv5zr
@Jimbob-zv5zr 4 года назад
@@WoodByWright well the Veritas are over priced for me. I've looked at so many ideas now... It's always the same... You think this part will be simple then once you get deeper into it all it becomes another huge area :D . @WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 года назад
No. It sounds like you just have very smooth shafts on your hold fast. That is a problem with those. Because they are not hand forged their bent smooth shaft. So you don't have a whole lot of grip. You can easily fix that by taking a file and scratching up the surface. I know that sounds like a bad thing to do to it but it actually makes it a very useful tool. Giving it a little bit of friction allows it to hold in nicely. That way they don't have to bend as far to hold tightly.

it depends on the wood, the orientation of the grain and what you intend to be doing with them? for most uses, I like to keep them a good 2"+ away. but some people will install a light duty row along the front and set those back 1/2" but they can not be used for anything other than end vice work. the big question is why though? I have never had a use where I need them any closer then 3"

Thanks for a quick reply. Here is an (rather winding) explanation why I'd need them as close to the edge as possible: I'm just starting this woodworking, but I live in a small apartment and don't have room for a proper sized workbench. I'm planning a very compact, miniature workbench that would let me at least get started on woodworking. This means my bench would be only about 8" deep (and 4' wide and without a vise) and I was planning to use 2 rows of dogholes, one in front and one in back. This would leave only tad bit more than 3/4" from doghole to the edge of table. This is to maximize workpiece size. Having those dogholes closer to the middle of the workbench would severely limit my already very limited working area. I'm also considering several choices of different woods and wether to use a single plank or laminate the desk from several smaller planks (like Paul Sellers in his workbench vid). Single plank would let me drill dogholes on facegrain which I believe would be better for holdfasts and also would probably let me put those dogholes close to the edge than with laminated bench where the dogholes would be drilled on edgegrain, which I believe is weaker considering the use of holdfasts. Also material is still a bit under debate. I had already decided to use Nordic birch (I live in Finland) since it costs about half of oak, which was my second choice. Oak of course is tougher and would let my put the dogholes closer to the edge than birch. Basically I could put those dogholes 2 inches from the edge (or single row in middle of bench) but that would limit the size of working pieces quite a lot. Ok, that was quite a long explanation. I'm open to suggestions about benchtop material and placement of dogholes.

With Birch and useing holdfasts I would want at least 1.5" from the edge.
@jukkahuuskonen
@jukkahuuskonen 6 лет назад
I'll probably just compromise with the width and just put those dogholes to about 2" from the side and deal with diminished work area in some other way. And I think I'll go with birch, unless I'll manage to get some good deal on oak. Cheers and thanks for the advice!

Great video. It seems like having the dog holes close to the front edge of the bench means the holdfast would get in the way of some tasks. Would there be any benefit in having some dog holes towards the back of the bench so the holdfast(s) would be less intrusive?

What is the minimum depth for the bench? How close in size should the dog holes be?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 лет назад
+phooesnax I know some people that will use it on a 2" thick bench but people with thinner benches just put a backer board there and drill through both.most are made for a 3/4" inch hole but some people like it tighter at 11/16"

+Blog das Madeiras the normal is 3/4" hole 13/16" rod. The reach is 8" and from the table top to the tip was 1' and from the table top ultimate is 4" but you can make it almost anything you want. Size is not that important.

3/4 " hole equates to 12/16" so that makes the rod is 1/16" bigger than the hole?

Sorry to be annoying, but at around 2:28 in your showing the workings of this hold fast you actually tilted it the wrong way. It is leaning forward instead of backwards, away from the protruding hook as it should be. How else could you tap it on the back to release it. Just saying! :)

I hope to one day have a bench with holes. Without that, there isnt a point in having holdfasts. Btw, i saw them in one of our specialist woodworking shops. These things are not cheap. So what i want to see is someone make these with minimal tools from rebar or something like it. Can that be done?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 лет назад
+Willem Kossen I have thought of making them but that would require making a forge and for that it is just cheaper and easer for me to buy them.
@F14Goose37

Wood By Wright but making a simple brake drum forge would be pretty useful amyways. I'm finishing up my shop built anvil right now so I can use the old coil springs from the front of my truck and make specialty plane irons and chisels. Most of the work in that is the heat treat and the filing. Then it's woodworking from there to finish the tool. I think if you have the will, a small forge set up is indispensable to a woodworker.

the other thing with hand forged is that the surface is somewhat pitted and pounded as it actually been forged into shape and that gives it a texture will hold in the hole and it wont want to wiggle back out, the other great thing about that is because it is a soft texture, it's not going to rip apart your holes so you can slide this in and out of your hole as much as you want and is not going to make the hole any bigger it works great for you these. this particular hold fast are from black bear forge if you want to see how he makes this duck build hold fast
