The Jagdterrier, also known as the German Hunting Terrier, is a cunning and fearless breed of dog that was developed in Germany in the late 1800s. These terriers were bred to hunt foxes, badgers, and other small game, and they are known for their incredible work ethic, high intelligence, and unwavering loyalty to their owners. Despite their small size, Jagdterriers are incredibly strong and athletic, and they are able to keep up with their prey in even the toughest terrain. If you're looking for a dog with boundless energy, a never-ending desire to hunt, and a deep affection for their humans, then the Jagdterrier might just be the perfect breed for you.

Coming from a German hunter: Good pronounciation of the breed name! I currently have a super rare american breed here: a Plotthound. But my next dog will probably be a Heideterrier - a working cross between Jagd and Airedale Terrier, to add a bit of size so they are better with snow and cannot get into fox dens as easily, because they are supposed to be specialised on wild boar. Their first breeders were also policement who hat Schutzhund in mind, and there are some that use Heideterriers in that way. Sadly I will have to wait another year or so until my Plott is fully grown and trained before getting a second dog. Good luck to you and your little devil - enjoy a Jagdterriers fierceness, agility, and boldness! They are great dogs and he will have a great owner with you.

I’ve had a Jagterrier as a boy. He was hunting all his life. Bringing carcasses of fallen animals from the woods. Just beware Jagterriers aren’t sofa dogs but quite opposite. They love outdoors and cannot bear being stuck indoors. They are very good for training but very independent dogs that are needing a good owner with good understanding of their nature and needs. Because they are needing constantly to be on the move they have liability for accidents of all sorts if left to own devices. In summary they are working dogs and working dogs only. Not sofa pets. They like being smelly and dirty.

We just got a new jagdterrier, Ursa who joins brother, Barchan (Bear) who is 5. We have had others before. They are amazing dogs, great and fearless hunters. They blood trail, retrieve and keep all small animals off the land. They love to swim alongside the kayak when on the river (with a life jacket to be safe), they have webbed toes. Bear saved my husband from a rattlesnake this year - too quick to get bit. I disagree about not making good pets as ours are great snugglers when inside. They do need lots of space to run and work to do - lots of energy. They are for active people and need high quality training.

Good summary. Although I live in Poland we only have one venomous viper, but mine Jagtterrier was facing them often and it was amazing to see his speed and instinctive responses.

I've had a jagdterrier for 10 years now and agree completely that they make wonderful pets. Mine loves to snuggle and is very protective of his human "pack".

He will try to kill everything you have if you do not reign him in early. You basically bought a velociraptor. I love jagds but I will say they are not great in big multi pet environments. They are German engineered killing machines. Mine was great in the house but obedience outside the house is another story. They are fun! Enjoy

Are these good at hunting ground squirrels? Always been thousands in my area, my big dog tries to hunt them hes just little large an slow 😂. However. That would probably be one my deciding factor, as that would one of the largest jobs that he would be getting..in terms of working him

Hey.. ahm.. Grassroot, I've seen the last Vid with the Puppy and the K9 Idea; appreciate that. Mybe that's the only way to bring a Jagd out of constant Prey Drive. Meanwhile we have 2 'Jagd'breeds is Germany, in engl. the 'G. Working T.' is the 'Westfalenterrier' one of the not-FCI Local breeds. The DJT is in engl G. Hunt(ing) T. For Ratting, small Game Control and something like that maybe a Patterdale would be better. You have a high High HIGH preydrive Hunting Machine now, he will somedays every small animals see as ..Prey. All your cats, rabbits, Hares -equal it is wild or tamed- whatever will be hunted and killed. You can't stop this. Or i don't think you can this change in the mind of a Jagd. (You are a very relaxed dog trainer, i think you know exactly what you do, i think also instinctively if a one can afford the lil one, rhan you. If you csn handle something different, let me know this. We here in G. could also need different viewpoints. A Jagd is a Finder and Attacker of all wild animals. Equal what size. He would for sure attack bears. On Land, in Water, maybe he will climb trees. And he never, never ever give up! A question i ask me all day is: i really really do not know how a Jagd survives in a land with big predators, because of his smallness. Even in Dog Fights he underlay.. with approximately 10kg. Sure, he has a Dead Grip like Bullbreads, but most Dogs who would attack an Jagd have 3-4 times more weight.

You better dont do bitework with them. They are crazy and become uncontrollable too easy in this. They are bred for hunting in harshest conditions so for scent work and prey drive.

Im curious why a dog over a barn cat for rodent control. I mean other than dogs are better than cats obviously.
@frechwieoskar8052

Then you havent seen Terriers ratting... They are active hunters while cats are waiting for mice/rats to appear. So dogs kill about 20 times faster. And they are cooler in any other aspect too ;-)
@jessicagislason4855
@jessicagislason4855 5 месяцев назад
A ratting breed dog like a jagd, bedlington etc will kill 300 rats mice etc in a hour given the chance, a cat might kill that in a month max if they are nonstop which they likely aren't.

I have had one for 10 years. She is a pet, but always reactive and always hunting. She is most definitely a house dog but we give her a lot of freedom. She loves to cuddles and sleep under the covers. I would not have chose her. But I got her. Roxy is my best friend. I fear anxiety from fireworks may kill her someday.

I got one from a rescue. He's a lap dog. Very bull headed though. Prey drive is pretty high with him. My dachshund is an off leash dog while in our yard but not the terrier. I doubt he'll ever be. He sees a squirrel or rabbit and he pulls like a truck.
