I beat a Lumper fee on the spot about a month ago. They tried to charge me 580 bucks for a Lumper fee. I told their warehouse manager 1, that was a ridiculously high fee, and 2, I'm not paying it because they did not offer me the opportunity to unload the truck myself to begin with. Which I would've been more than happy to offload myself. They were not happy at all with that response, but they gave me my bills, and let me go on my merry way. If that warehouse hired an outside company to offload trucks, they are responsible for paying those workers. Not Me.

Thank you. You are absolutely a jewel in this industry. Can you request no lumper on the rate con? Word of mouth is not secure enough.
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics Год назад
Thank you! Yes, you can request broker to put a lumper on the rate con. Or at very least get a written confirmation via email.

Thank you for this informative video. Do the Broker sometimes put that in their Broker Agreeement? So it is a must to always ask while booking the loads if there are any Lumper fees?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics 2 года назад
To be on a safe side, it is always better to ask a broker about lumper fees.

Hi Roman! Thanks for the video! You mentioned that some receivers, especially grocery warehouses hire lumper service companies. I was under the impression that it's always the shipper who contracts and pays for the lumper service. Am I wrong on this?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics 2 года назад
Mike, technically speaking the shipper usually will be paying the bill for the lumper service at the end (by reimbursing a freight broker). However, very often lumper service wants driver to pay them before they start unloading a truck and this can lead to the outcomes outlined in our video. So, it is important to be prepared for such situations.

Hi Rowan. Any update on the issue that Truck brokers want Congress to call out illegal dispatching, and dispatcher should get bond or registers as a brokers & they can only dispatch for one motor carrier ?

Thank you for your comment Alinoor! We actually discuss this subject in our video about getting Freight Broker license. Here is a quick link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_lwRmiePrPM.html

If I am the shipper and I use a carrier to deliver products (ltl and ftl) to a facility hiring lumper service, why the lumper service is still charging the drivers if the receiving facility pays them to unload trucks?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics Год назад
Estelle, in most cases, lumper services are not being paid by receivers. They are a third party service.
@donitmyself8935

Isn't it possible to invoice the lumper service if you DO have to pay them. 49 U.S. Code § 14103. They in turn would seek payment from the shipper, receiver or broker. Ether way I see the biggest problem here is ltl companies, company drivers, brokers and owner ops don't have a standard procedure for dealing with lumpers. The lumper services take advantage of that. The above law It shall be unlawful to coerce or attempt to coerce any person providing transportation of property by motor vehicle for compensation in interstate commerce.

As indicated in our video, if you stand your ground, freight broker (or shipper/receiver) will solve the issue. The problem is, this may take too much time which may result in greater losses for a motor carrier. Other than that, you are correct, they can not force motor carrier to pay for lumper or unload cargo.

As a shipper, would it make sense to ask for reimbursement from the receiving facility for the lumper fee that was assessed?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics Год назад
Yes, this is something that should be discussed between shipper and receiver when they create their order/agreement.

@AlfaXLogistics

If you are a driver or OO working for a company. Then you need to check with the company as to why you were charged or how can you can get reimbursed.

Can you ask the brokers during negotiations is there a lumper fee?
@AlfaXLogistics

Absolutely! Asking this question can prevent lumper related issues.
@chocolatebutterfly9295

So is it better to just decline the load once you find out that there will be a lumper fee while talking to the broker over the phone?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics Год назад
Not necessarily. If there is lumper, you can ask if broker will pay for it. If they do, there is nothing to worry about. If they need driver to pay for it, you need to make sure your client is OK with this scenario. Then you can make a decision if you should proceed with the load.

Great video. Q: In the case that the broker says he didn't know they needed lumper service and/or doesn't want to pay for it no matter what, do we take the hit and lose that payment charge or is there a way to invoice them for that charge since you stated that it is the brokers responsibility and that they typically would know about it? 2nd Q: what about OS&D's? If we have overages or damages, that would be extra service charge from us to broker if there are processes to send back those cases or pallets?
@AlfaXLogistics
@AlfaXLogistics 2 года назад
Ed, when broker says they can not pay for the lumper, they are actually not willing to "front" the payment. They want your client to pay it and then they will reimburse your client. So technically, your client will not take a loss. However, you as a dispatcher want to make sure that as soon as your client pays a lumper, you forward lumper receipt to the broker and have them send you a new rate confirmation with a lumper cost added to your rate. As to OS&Ds, this is an entirely different subject and will require a more in-depth discussion. We will consider producing a video on this topic in the future.
