Isn't this just another way of saying ROI (Return on Investment)? How long will it take to get your money back or return the value of your investment. Like putting up solar panels. How many years will it take for the Solar panels to produce enough energy to pay for themselves? Didn't know Payback Period was a thing. Thanks!

I wanted to know your thoughts on the classes you believe I should take to gain a better knowledge as well as the ones you took in school, especially the ones that were more focused on what you do today as opposed to the other courses they make you do. I don't think it's that simple. After calculating dividends and capital gains, you still have to factor in taxes and inflation. I would also look at opportunity loss.

I agree with the over simplification, and that’s one of the issues with payback period. It’s too simple. That’s why I’m a bigger fan of something like discounted cash flow to determine if investing makes sense

Taxes though are almost impossible to account for with almost any investing scenario less you assume what applied today is the same going out into the future but even then it would be based on different inputs for every single person. Do you need to rely on capital gains to fund your lifestyle? Or dividend income? What state are you in? What is our income bracket? Are you already retired but not claiming social security yet or retired and claiming social security? Are you using a taxable brokerage account? Or a combination of retirement accounts paying income tax now or a tax deduction now? Are you using an HSA to invest with or not?
