What is a payment gateway and How does a Payment Gateway Work? It’s a software that helps with the online merchant account to process credit cards online. A payment gateway serves as a secure portal to encrypt credit card data and is an essential part of the online payment processing transaction.

This is very helpful for me to understand to whole thing abt payment gateway. I had a task abt this subject. i did a youtube search and your came like 4 in the list but the most recent to my liking the way the title was described. and true enough in simple words you did a good job in answering to all those questions I had in my head. During Business hours the merchant Terminal/POS machine sends payment txns to the payment gateway to determine if the card was authorized or declined for the payment amount specified. The payment gateway sends the request to card companies(VISA/AMEX/MC) for them to issue the Approve or Decline status. At the end of the day the merchant sends the list of all approved payments for that day to the payment processor for clearing(txn verification) and settlement(moving the money from the buyers card issuing bank to the merchants account).

If I am a dropshipper, I need a payment gateway to receive money from customers. This is a known thing, but when I receive money from customers, how do I disable their money to the Suppliers Does the payment gateway take care of all the details between dropshipper and suppliers Or that the dropshipper transfers the money he owes to the Suppliers using his Visa card ?????

Let's say I have an eCommerce store. I open a business bank account with Wells Fargo, which is where my payments will be deposited. Is the Wells Fargo account the Merchant Account?

How come payment gateways don't require a CVV number when taking a payment over the phone?

Yes there is. Payment Service providers are companies like Paypal, Stripe and Paypal. Payment Gateways are companies like Authorize.net, CardPointe or NMI.com. Merchant account providers and payment service providers a.k.a. "PSP's" are different. The terminology is similar but they are different. I'm about ready to release a video the compares PSP's and Merchant accounts so stay tuned for that. Coming out soon.
