View more at www.MathAndScience.com. In this lesson, we will learn what a percentage is and understand why percent is an important concept in math. A percent is when we express something as it compares to the number 100. The word percent literally means "per one hundred". We use percent when discussing probability, fractions, statistics, interest rates, and numerous other subjects. Here we learn how to express a given percent in terms of a fraction and a decimal so that when we solve percent problems, we will know how to carry out the operations.

Excellent job explaining percentages, we use them everyday with sales tax and weather, and many jobs require it. Hope to see more like when a value needs to exceed its rating at 125 percent...
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 2 года назад
Thank you! I have some examples like that coming up in a future lesson. But FYI if it is 125%, just treat it exactly the same way = 125% = 125/100 = 1.25. So If you are a donut shop that can make a maximum of 60 donuts per day, and I tell you that isn't good enough, you need to make 125% of your donut capacity, you would take 60 * 1.25 = 75 donuts. So if I ask you to exceed your donut making capacity to go beyond your usual 100%, and increase it to 125%, you need to make 75 donuts instead of the usual 60. Notice we treated these percents in the same way as any other - no difference.

Why should we convert the percentage into a reduced fraction or decimal? Eg. 50%=50/100 is itself gives the clear picture of percentage.
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 2 года назад
We do this because later we will use it to solve percentage problems. So, we will multiply by the fractional equivalent form of the percent. It is easier to multiply by 1/2 than multiplying by 50/100. You are correct though that either will work.

I follow how to do the math, but I'm not as clear on the idea. I usually think of a decimal as used with a number that's less than a whole, like cents to a dollar. But for 1.5 million, isn't the decimal separating two whole numbers?

I just looked this up and it looks interesting. Not a bad way for students to remember. However I prefer to focus on what the fraction means, then you don't have to remember anything because all fractions mean the same thing when thinking of fractions as the division of two numbers.
