This Toshiba laptop hard drive had a crushed/dented top case that had affected it's performance.
The drive would not spin when power was applied to it. The drive was disassembled to discover the platter could not spin. www.sertdatarecovery.com/hard-...
The damage to the hard drive's case was preventing it from working properly. The only possible solution in this case was to take the platter and head stack assembly out and transplant it into another hard drive’s case. The drive had to be completely rebuilt from scratch.
Platter swaps are the most difficult repair and procedure performed on a hard drive. Simply having the wrong torque on the spindle screws can cause the drive to be unreadable by the heads.
In most cases inexperienced engineers require many failed attempts before they achieve their first successful one.
Very few data recovery cases actually require this procedure. Usually a platter swap is only performed when the spindle or motor is damaged or stuck, or the case has been physically damaged.

Do they no make that metal band that tightens around the platters to exchange platters anymore or does it not work and that's why you use tape?

I can take all screws off on the platter except for the middle one, how do you unscrew it to take off the platters?

Everything must match, we have a proprietary way we choose our donors, but for the most part it needs to be almost identical.

SERT Data Recovery If I threw away the label on the hard disk interior that has all the info, is it possible to identify it and find a donor for it ? or is it possible to just use a hard disk with the same P/N ?

Hi, I have a 500gb Toshiba 3.5" DT01ACA050 with 50 years of my music collection on it and it just went dead. It shows up in My PC but it take a while for the green bar to go across the top, but it will not allow Disk manager to populate but there is no clicking sounds. I have tried a couple of recovery software but none of them can read it. Do you have any ideas and would it be possible for me to swap the platter as a last hope to try and recover it. I have the exact same hard drive only it is a 1tb for a donor if it would work. Thanks.

Hello, One question. I made the change with an identical donor disk, I also changed the firmware, but it still did not work. Do you know if the plate has to be aligned or something else overlooked? Thanks and excellent video.

Hello sir i droped my 2tb wd elements hardisk from my bike while riding, after i reach home i contact that hdd to my laptop it shows for 2 to 3 minutes after that suddenly its stop responding and then not detecting.when i open the hdd fully i found the head was detected and the platter is ok non scratched now what should i do, i ordered a same hdd should i try to swap the platter?

CAN YOU SWAP FROM A DEAD 2T drive in tO A 200 GB CASE? tHUS JUST ONE OF THE PLATTERS INTO THE 200GB CASE.

I wouldn't try that yourself, and that's not the right protocol for a head problem. But if you want to do more work than necessary, or potentially lose all your data feel free to experiment.

to swap platter WD 3.5" at center of platter there is circle with 6 screws and 2 of that 6 not able to unscrew

They do unscrew, you have likely stripped the head as they are softer than the other screws, but we did not do this video as a "how to" as no one should perform this in a data loss scenario except certified engineers who have already done this successfully multiple times on different drives.

question if i take the platters out of a western digital model wd2002faex dcm hancnv2aa and put it into a western digital model wd2002faex dcm harchv2aa will it read and write with no problems remind you their the same model other then the dcm number or is there more to it that im missing

Why are you swapping the platters? Also it's not suggested to do that, unless you are highly trained and experienced.

ppl asking how to unscrew the head or the platters, and what screw driver it needs.. and those ppl want to replace the platters.. dam......!!!! swapin platters or heads aint easy job. odc u need skills, and ofcourse u need a clone donor with same firmware. in this video they swapped a single spatter disk. things getting 1000 times harder when swapping multiple plattets

@@Sertdatarecovery had a hitachi 60gb single platter hdd that apparently suffered a head crash wound'nt spin first but after releasing head by rotating platter it spins by the head no usable anymore i need data off it and i have sourced another old hitachi 60gb drive but mine is a hts54xxxxxx and the replacement one i found is an hts71xxxxxx. I am not sure if the heads are interchangeable between both drives platter is damage less only has a minor scratch from the head point down. Can i change the head from newer to older hdd just need it running to get data off
