In this video, we’re going to talk about a very important part of any automated industrial process the Safety PLC.
A Safety PLC is one of the 3 parts of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS). The SIS can also be referred to as the Safety Shutdown System.
Stated simply, the SIS monitors the equipment or process and if an unacceptable condition or risk, or an unsafe condition occurs it reacts by the shutdown of the equipment or process.
Safety PLCs are constantly guarding against plant failures which could result in harm to people, equipment, or the environment. When specified hazardous conditions occur, the Safety PLC will respond by placing the plant in a safe condition.
The Safety PLC is referred to as the Logic Solver in the Safety Instrumented System.
Safety shutdown systems are not new. Before the introduction of Safety PLCs, plant shutdown conditions were monitored and operated by typical field devices and instruments and the logic was performed by hardwired relays. Gone are the days of hard-wired relay logic in both Process and Safety PLCs.
A Safety PLC is just like a regular PLC and is programmed the same way.
The logic in the Safety PLC is locked. It has safety signatures ensuring that coding has not been changed.
Physically, other than they might be a different color, they look exactly the same! But…that’s where the similarity ends.
Safety PLC has extra features like redundancy and added hardware functionality that adheres to a specific Safety Integrity Level (or SIL).
The Safety PLC can perform additional field device checking such as snooping for broken wires, failed contacts, among other features.
The Safety PLC has the multi-channel capability for redundant I/O monitor and operation capability.

That's right! I would only add, that the logic isn't always the same as for automation PLC. For example, I work at SICK with security sensors as an engineering intern, and one of our products is SICK Safety PLC, the Flexi Soft. It doesn't use Ladder, but a drag-and-drop logic. The Professor from my university says it is harder to manage with, but I think it is easier in comparison to Ladder hahaha.

Although the functions are similar, it would be great to see a breakout from machine safety, vs process safety as all the examples on this are surrounding process safety.

Does the logic written for a Safety PLC need to be certified, or does the person who writes the logic for a safety PLC need to be certified, such as TÜV? Thanks in advance!
@realpars
@realpars 2 года назад
The person who designs the SIS system specifications and details the SIF requirements (including SIL calculations) should be TUV or CFSE certified. The programmer does not need to be. The program will be tested against the specifications after installed. The certified engineer will have ultimate responsibility of the end product.

Thanks for the video. I would disagree when you say that a safety PLC is programmed in the same way as a regular PLC. Safety PLCs are energized systems while regular PLCs are de-energized systems, which means that in order to keep higher rates of safety, the Safety PLC logic application is 1 to normal and 0 to shutdown, this makes the whole programming mindset changes between both systems.
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
Hi Raul. You’ll get no disagreement from us on your point about programming. To be clear, when we say that both regular and safety PLC’s are programmed in the same way, we are not referring to programming techniques or mindset. We are speaking of using the same programming software and/or methods such as ladder logic or function block.
