Solid state relays (SSR) are used for switching on and off applications without the use of movable contacts. They are usually modular in design and have a long life span. This video covers Zero switching, Instant On, Peak Switching and Analog switching SSRs.

Thanks for short and clear explanation. Most videos on the topic are 10 minutes long and hard to watch.

Thank you for the explaination. I was wondering why I was watching this item on ebay and now I know what for.

You have to test solid state relays in diode mode, since triac based SSR's will not show direct continuity across the switched side even when fully turned on, but will show a ~1v voltage drop in diode mode.

It was short but an informative video. Does SSR provide short circuit protection?

Our elevator maintenance vendor is quoting $2,800 to replace our old mechanical starter with a new solid state one. Does this sound like a fair price and do you have any recommended installation vendors in the Los Angeles area?

Any hobbyists(/DIYers/Makers) around? What kinda SSR do you usually use? Or mostly needed for common projects? TIA

Well here's a loaded question, cuz there has to hundreds of different types and ratings on these things. If I had to throw a dart at this board, I might lean towards 24volt input and 120/240Vac output control. If you need a part number, go to our website, click on "Buy Products", and then "Electromechanical" and then "Relays" and then "Solid State". You will find 2247 choices. So,,,, I strongly suggest you first decide what kind of voltage will control the SSR, (AC or DC, 5, 12, 24, 120 etc.) then you must decide what kind of voltage it will be controlling on its output. This way you can narrow it down significantly. Good luck on your project.

Hello Everyone, I have a small question about SSR D1D100, I have a battery output connected through SSR to Load Motor, and I can easily Turn On and Turn OFF SSR D1D100 with input Voltage as wanted..but it is only Battery Discharge Mood connecting Motor but When i want to charge the battery, I have same SSR connected and Charging through Relay in to Battery(I can also Stop Charging by Turn OFF Relay and TURN ON Relay to Charge was the IDEA) ..So I don't know why these SSR works few days and Goes always TURN ON Mood? so my question is are these SSR D1D100 only used to connect load and discharge not to Charge Battery ? Unidirection not Bidirectional? Thank you for your Helpful Answer

Hi can you advise please, I'm using contactors to switch capacitor into and out of a motor circuit running at 415 vac 50 hz. The max capacitor size will be max 600 microfarad. The circuit will be triggered by 240 vac using voltage control relays but I need the SCR to switch at Zero cross over and then when the voltage builds to switch off at zero cross over. I will also need I believe a snubber circuit . Can you recommend any items please? Many thanks Andrew

If your multimeter has diode test mode, then yes. Continuity will always test infinite, since you have to overcome ~1v diode voltage drop before continuity is apparent.

Hello, We would like to try to assist you. Can you gives us some information regarding what you are trying to work with/build? Thanks!

I am building a powder coat curing oven that is about 6' x 6' x 8' (I have some large pieces that need to be cured). I know typical home wiring quite well but electronics is another story. I need to heat this space to around 420 degrees f. I will only use the oven once a week at most so it's okay if it takes a while to heat up. I am wondering how many heating elements I should use, what kind of SSRs to use (and do I need one for each heating element?). Then I would need a digital power controller along with a heat probe. Then there is the recirculating fan and anything else I may be over looking. Trying to wrap my mind around this project.

Hi Sammy, In the interest of liability, we must stress that what we are going to give you is merely suggestions, rather than instructions. Given that, ovens are a little bit out of our area of expertise, though I think that we can still try to help you somewhat. Upon asking around for you, it was suggested to me that you should start by choosing an appropriate process controller, and then you should choose the SSR based on that. I was also informed that SSRs nearly always require some sort of heatsink in order to carry their maximum rated current, so that is another thing to keep in mind. You will also need some sort of sensing device such as a thermocouple or TRD. Fortunately, modern temperature controllers tend to be very plug and play with just about any sort of TC/TRD input. Hope this helps!
