What is a stroke? A stroke is a medical emergency. It occurs when there is a disruption in blood supply to the brain. This leads to brain damages, translating into impairments impacting daily living activities.
What are the different types of strokes?
• Ischaemic stroke that is caused by a blockage in the artery cutting off the blood supply to the brain. This is the most common type of stroke.
• Haemorrhagic stroke that is caused by a rupture of the artery causing a bleeding in or around the brain.
• Transient ischaemic attack or TIA, sometimes called mini-stroke because the symptoms last a few minutes or hours, and always less than 24 hours. It does not cause permanent damage but it should be taken seriously by seeking medical care.
Finally, learn the importance of taking the person to the hospital for immediate evaluation and care. The longer you wait, the more harm the stroke can cause and the fewer acute treatment options might be available.
