Jim breaks down everything you need to know about a tankless water heater, from the brands to installing to maintenance to rebates.
A tankless water heater heats water only when you need it. They are also referred to as on-demand water heaters. A tank water heater keeps the water continuously heated, when it are using it or not, therefore tankless water heaters use less gas for heating. The higher efficiency of tankless water heaters and their long lifespan, make them the preferred option for water heating by plumbers.

Our tanked heater just died, getting an estimate today for a tankless and water softener install. Double checked with your channel because if you say it's good, I trust it. :). Thank you so much!

May I suggest that you discuss the exterior non-freeze wall hydrant and how it works. I am finding people ask me to turn off their water supply to their non-freeze wall hydrant (like in the old days when they only had a boiler drain valve). Still only drawback is, they have to disconnect their hose from the hydrant. Good website. Thomas Jones CIPE.

Hi Jim . Back to my slow draining sink . I installed a ventless drain pipe and it helped some , but if you run the water for more than 30 seconds , it backs up . Do you have anymore ideas ?

Thanks for the videos, So do these need to be installed outside?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 года назад
Eric, tankless water heaters can be installed inside or outside. When installed inside, you have to have a PVC pipe vent and you can vent it out through a basement or garage wall. Glad you like the videos.

The reason I have talked about minerals in water is, here in Pickerington, Oh we seem to have abnormal amount of minerals in our water as compared to neighboring Columbus, Oh as they filter their water through Limestone and the water is a little softer.

Is there a way to know you have got the copper or brass to hot and it’s time to start with new pieces? Thanks for you advice.
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 года назад
Eric, the best way to solder a fitting is to clean both and flux both. When you heat the fitting, you put the heat on one side and the solder on the other. When you see it draw in to the fitting, then you know you have it hot enough. You might want to touch it a little with the heat. To answer your question, yes you can get it too hot. When the solder doesn’t draw int the fitting and it looks like you are burning it, that’s when it’s too hot. Good luck.

On another video you said not to drain your water heater, what should I do if my hot water pressure is low all over the house?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 года назад
Jose, a tank water heater that stores and heats the water is the one I don’t recommend flushing. An on-demand water heater doesn’t have any storage as it has a heat exchanger which means there is a 3/8” pipe size which is heated with a high fire burner. This forms sediment in the heat exchange so needs to be flushed with vinegar. To answer your question on the low hot water pressure, you want to check the inlet and outlet side nipples and see if they’re plugged. If not that, also check the flexible supply lines. If it has di-electric unions check those to make sure they’re not plugged. Those get plugged with rust. Good luck.

We had one fail. It was installed in about... 2013 or 2014 and it failed due to corrosion. They used cheap steel in some vital area. I can think of the brand off hand, but it was pretty bad.
@Chironex_Fleckeri
@Chironex_Fleckeri 3 года назад
So it lasted maybe 6 years, and I want to say the company made it right by offering a large discount on a new model. Could be growing pains of a new technology? This water heater has saved us a lot of $. It is noticeable.

Morning, I am looking at replacing our current cast iron boiler and electric hot water tank with a combi to run both domestic and radiant baseboard. I have been told the brand you recommend out of Korea isnt repairable and basically a throw-away unit after a few years. I few people/ master plumbers who work locally here recommend IBC brand.... $5000.00 unit that is serviceable/ 7.5 GPM. I currently have about 40 feet of baseboard/fins which may increase to 60 feet with the remodel ( retired from the trades doing it DIY). One shower, one bath, a newer efficient washing machine, and dishwasher and family of 4 that never showers at the same time. Do you have experience with IBC combi boilers? Thank You
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 2 года назад
Donny McClure, I’m sorry but I have no experience with the IBC brand. I use the Navien. Anytime I have had a problem, Navien has been great. I know of only one brand that would be considered a throw- away and that is sold by Home Depot. Plumbers and heating contractors only use products that are sold by a local distributor. I have installed four different brands of tankless water heaters and I’ve liked them all and have received great service from manufacturers. Don’t appreciate when someone slams a product that they don’t want to sell. What they are trying to sell you is probably a good product, however. Thanks for asking my opinion.

Hi, Do you have any opinions on the natural gas vs electric on demand water heaters?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 2 года назад
CW, I have only installed natural gas on demand heaters. I use the Navien brand because you can circulate the water. That means when you turn on a hot water faucet, you have hot water in 3-5 seconds.

EHH we disagree on that point, these are fine for spring through fall but by winter that water is soo dam cold these things just fall on their face! plus all the extra cost to install them a $600 tanked heater every 10 years (I get 15 normally) better deal for me. saving $20 a month takes a looooong time to overcome all those nasty upcharges and luke warm winter water. promising tech yes but you need to put 2 into a house for real hot water

How many manufacturers are there of water heaters? What brands of sump pump would you recommend?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 года назад
Hi John, the brands that are the most popular and the brands plumbers use in my area include Navien, Takagi, Norton and Rinnai. There are other brands but I believe they are made by these manufacturers. They are all now coming out with built in circulating pumps. Sump pumps and sewage ejector pumps that I use the most is the Liberty pump. Other brand names are Zoeller, Hydromatic, and Gould’s which are good quality too. I recommend at least a 1/3 hp sump pump. Thanks for your question.

Electric?? Another question, a video on changing the lower element in an electric heater
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 2 года назад
akiva zohar, let me explain rather than show. Turn the water and power off, open a hot water faucet to relieve pressure and then close it, take the two wires off the element, use an inch and a half socket, have the new element with the gasket on it ready to go, screw out old element, slide and tighten the new element in, put the wires back on. Turn water back on, make sure there is no air in the line, then turn the power on. I don’t drain the heater when I’m just replacing the element because when you pull the element and install the new element, you get less than two cups of water out. If you want to clean out the sediment, then you drain the heater.

How about electric on demand
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 2 года назад
Michael Parrett, if you lived in Europe or Asia, an electric on demand heater is all you would use. The heater is located on every plumbing fixture. In the shower, it is right next to the shower head. They work fine there but not in the United States. Here they have electric on demand but they don’t work very well in my opinion. Keep checking into it as they are probably improving them.

Beware- If you have a lot of minerals in your water, do not install a tankless water heater. Why? the tankless water heater throws a lot of heat to the water in the exchanger to be able to heat the water. The minerals drop out within the heat exchanger nd clogging the exchanger tubes. The tankless water heater costs about $1,500 and $$ to install. Do the math.
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 года назад
Thomas, everyone has minerals in their water. Tankless water heater manufacturers are recommending that you have a softener or a Big Blue filter. You should clean them once a year with white vinegar or a recommended cleaning solution. On Demand water heaters have a longer life than standard heaters. They carry a ten year warranty on the heat exchanger if they leak and they can all be repaired. You can not repair a leak in a standard water heater. I personally feel they are well worth the money.
