Countless online debates have been spurred by the question, "what was the first theme park?" But what's almost never established in these discussion is what a theme park even is. The term "theme park" began as a marketing term, used to disassociate Disneyland from the general amusement parks of the time. It came to dominate the amusements industry, to the point where parks that are clearly just amusement parks call themselves "theme parks" in an effort to raise their appeal among consumers. Now, "theme park" has entered the cultural lexicon, and become nearly synonymous and interchangeable with "amusement park" in general conversation.
Here at the Theme Parchive, we approach theme parks from the perspectives of history, design, art, and engineering. We try to treat theme parks as a subject worthy of study (or at least making entertaining 15-20 minute videos about on RU-vid). But to do that, we need to know what a theme park even is.
In this video, we explore that question, and try to come up with a satisfying definition of "theme park". While we acknowledge that those other definitions of the term are valid in their own rights, and we'll probably still use it that way from time-to-time. Our hope with this video is to have a channel-wide understanding of what makes a theme park a theme park going forward. It will also allow us to look at a new park, whether newly built or merely new to us, and determine whether or not it is a theme park, and why.
