How can thermowells be mounted?

The connection with flange is universal and is used in many processes. The compact form of the threaded connection saves space, and mounting is also very easy. If the process safety and robustness is important, then the thermowell can be welded into the process directly. For applications in the food or pharmaceutical industries, WIKA offers special thermowells with sanitary process connections which withstand the cleaning-intensive processes.
Which stem designs are there for thermowells?

In most cases, the tapered stem shape is used. A thermowell with a tapered stem guarantees a short response time and, at the same time, offers a high rigidity. With protection tubes, the straight tube design is the most widely used. This has a particularly cost-effective construction.

Which materials are thermowells made from?
Most are made from stainless steel. Special materials such as alloy C276 or alloy 400, amongst others, are used with especially demanding loads. Depending on the application and material, the thermowell can either be made completely of the special material or only the parts which are in contact with the process medium can be coated, e.g. with corrosion-resistant plastics.
In order to be able to ensure an accurate temperature measurement, the thermometer and thermowell must match each other perfectly. Worldwide, there are no uniform standards for the calculation and design of thermowells and this can lead to faulty designs with expensive and dangerous side effects. Guidelines such as ASME B40.9, API 551 or DIN 43772 as well as customer-specific requirements are used. For this reason, we recommend a consultation with our WIKA team of experts.
