Queen Victoria was given a couple of spitz dogs from Itally. She called them "toy Pomeranians" as they were about 10 lbs or so. This is what started the move to make Pomeranians smaller. These dogs she was given were Volpino Italiano (or Italian Spitz). This is not a German Spitz as the Volpino has a very long history of its own. The original Poms were basically German Spitz dogs from Pomerania that had a specific breeding program. They might have included other spitz in the breed by recall, Pomerania was on the Border of German and Poland. It is not okay to skip over the Volpino. Volpinos not only were used to help create the smaller Pom but also some say they were used to help create the toy and miniature American Eskimo dogs that were also basically German Spitz.
