Hi Jeff. A big shoutout to you from the Maritime Community in India. Your videos are really helping us getting an overall view of the life in the merchant marine. Could you please upload a video showing the duties of a deck cadet on board ships? It would be really helpful for cadets across the nation.

I got a technical question....why not use a GPS system for getting your location instead of using a manual sextant. GPS is far more accurate, easy to use and always available using satellites. Now we also have Glonass as a backup gps.

Did you make it aboard one? If so, pleases update us! I sailed for a few years and have always hoped to go back as a passenger. All the joys, none of the watchstanding / maintenance / drudgery. Alas, I didn't win the lottery I had planned on. Being a passenger on one of these mega-container ships would be an infinitely better experience than being inside one of those overcrowded floating casinos. And port calls in *real* cities, not mind-numbing outposts of trinket malls. I hope you made it!

Hi Jeff, comment from an 'old timer': the Captain is always in command. However, he will take the conduct (con) of the ship from the OOW as the need arises and normally when entering and leaving port or in heavy traffic areas e.g. Singapore Strait.

Ey Jeff! is importan to mention the current OOW must ask the outgoing OOW if the Master or the Chief Officer has left any verbal instructions to complied with or any night orders that there might be confusions whit and avoieding any emergency situation
@conniejurgs9427
@conniejurgs9427 6 лет назад
Usually the Master has standing orders that are written down and available on the chart table. If changes have been made recently those changes could be pointed out during the turnover at the end of the watch. Many times while far out at sea I have heard turnovers go something like... No changes in anything, and there's no other ships around. Things could get a lot more complicated while in heavy traffic or unusual circumstances. Then, many times, the captain could actually be on the bridge, but not in 'control of the helm'. If things get really interesting the captain could issue a command, "I've got the helm" and take control from the OOW.

I just recently got my OIC-NW license at 22 y.o. but currently still looking for opportunities for me to become an officer. The competition is difficult in our country since you pretty much need to have someone you know/a relative working on a shipping company to back you up (colloquialy termed as a "backer"), for which I do not have. Nevertheless, I am not giving up ;)

Depending on the size of the boat, the size of the team of the deck officers varies, there is no universal rules about the Number members that a vessel must have, so it is up to the company owner of the boat or the captain of the ship, what actually exists is a hierarchy in that order, there are the first, second and third deck officer on Board the vessel. The Range is determined based on the experience and performance of the individual.

Hellomy name is Ely Ramos, is it mandatory that in every ship there is a watchkeeper? In addition, the deck officers must have knowledge about the nautical charts and the electronic charts on board in case of a total blackout of the generators, why?

Hello jeff, I wanted to ask you. Something you mentioned in the video, you said. that the oow it's in charge of the life sawing appliances, now, do te third mate and the oow share the responsability? because as for as i know that's the third mate's duty. I have a second question for you, there's a moment in the video in which you pointedout that in some situations the use of radar is vital, I did some research and i fourd out that the radar has a really close relationship with the arpa how the two of them work together?
@luismiguelromeroossa7491
@luismiguelromeroossa7491 6 лет назад
According to the COLREG 72 and the STCW jeff, it is necessary to place beams in case of reduced visibility to use all possible navigation aids, in this case it would be important to use the RADAR and activate the S-band since this is less affected by these external agents. make another video where you can mention being things that are of great importance to us Deckofficers.

In a previous vlog, you mentioned that you went to school in Aus, as a Canadian citizen. What school did you attend, and did they help with job placement? If you don't mind, I'd really like to know the name of the school, so that I, an American, can look into it.

+Jarret H. I went to challenger institute maritime branch Going to Australian maritime college for my class 2 which i would recommend i didn't look for job placement since ive already had one but they will but usually more difficult since some companies only hire aussie

+JeffHK Were you awarded any scholarship? Isn't it expensive to study in Australia?
