Ok, just tell me what it is! It's a non-electric slow cooker! That's right - slow cook in the van, without plugging in anything. The perfect addition to vanlife... if you have room for it, that is. Follow along as I make a vegan vegetable stew recipe using the wonderbag!
Welcome to Minivan Camper Gal! I'm Kelly and I camp and travel in a Chrysler Pacifica Minivan, doing part-time van life. Here you will find van build videos, tips on the digital nomad lifestyle, general travel vlog videos, and more. I'm into minimalism, and I eat a mostly plant-based vegan diet. I'm still learning how to do vegan vanlife well! I have some great vegan camping recipes to share with you, but would love some suggestions, too! Sometimes I stealth camp in the city, but mostly I like to boondock. Join me and my camper van as we embark on all the car camping adventures!

My husband did this (a little differently) after deciding he was quitting his job with no money coming in. He heated things to boiling, took it off the stove, wrapped the pot in a fluffy towel and pulled out our old cooler and put the pot into it and shut the top. Then went out to mow, play with kids, play video games, etc. Our pans were predominantly steel, so I think that is what he used. When I got home from work, dinner was on the table, perfectly cooked and delicious! He learned to do this over the internet because 6 kids and one almost minimum wage job between us required us to save as much money as possible...

Yes, they are used regularly here in South Africa where we also often have periods of electricity loadshedding, ie when the national grid is overloaded and switched off to reserve power. Maybe use the bag to store away some other stuff like a jacket and winter bedding, then you can even sit on it. Love how you present your content in such a fun and no-nonsense way.

In Norway we just use our duvet. Pack it around the pot and leave it. 😉 We even have recepies on making duvet porridge.. 😊 Our duvets are pretty thick because it's cold here for 3/4 of the year. I thought it might be a pull in pillow case, because that would be great. Stuffing it with clothes, blankets or whatever, then pull the string and make it into a small storage pillow bag.. 😁

Thermal cookers have been around for decades. Best to purchase one that vacuum seals so your food doesn't spill. Thermos puts out a very good one it even comes with an insulated travel bag. I believe Stanley has a version and there is an Aussie version. All of them work great. You can even bake a cake in them.

I've seen the same thing done on the cheap. Line a bucket or a box with your quilt, put the hot pot in, cover it with a pillow or two and you've got the same thing with what you have in your van. It's a slow cooker, so don't expect an immediate meal. Jon in rural BC, Canada
@strawberryroad1347

You can also leave it in the bag overnight, to have a hot meal in the morning. 😊

So fascinating - I'm inspired by the reduced use of fuel. What a boon to people who have such onerous chores just to prepare their food. And, as you point out, it's much healthier to be away from wood smoke. Thank you for another great video!

Delicius food, vut not convinsed for small places and singel living. I do make similar often, and am using smaller pot for not have to eat the same for a week, especial with Red lentils, that make to be finished in + - 10 minutes. Best for food needing long time kooking, I think. Your resepie is simpel and taste good. Beans take longer time, so it can be useful there. But kooking stews are simple and usely good in taste

I wonder if I get a beef stew ready, sauteeing the veggies and small beef cubes, add the V8 and a lil wine, ,get everything mix and started simmering, then put in the Wonder Bag, it would be safer and cheaper then using propane ,on low for 3-4 hours? Hmmm it might revolutionize my cooking options once I start living in a vehicle, again

It’s a neat idea - Thermos has a thermocooker as well with an interior pot you cook with to bring everything up to a boil and then place it in the thermos outer pot. The Wonderbag is the same sort of thing - I’m not that keen on having something fabric covered as I’m not very neat and can imaging having to wash it on a regular basis. And it does seem to be a bit bulky but the cushion idea was neat for storage 😀
@minivancampergal1554
@minivancampergal1554 10 месяцев назад
Hey Katherine! ooh, I'll have to look into the thermocooker. Thanks for the tip! Yeah, it's pretty bulky to have to a permanent spot in my van.
@katherinekelly5380
@katherinekelly5380 10 месяцев назад
@@minivancampergal1554 I actually changed to using silicon oven mitts because I had to keep washing my insulated fabric ones so I know my limitations ! There was a narrowboat channel (Foxes Afloat) who used a thermocooker to reduce power consumption but the one they used (Mr D’s) seems to be only available in the UK and is pricey. I found the one by Thermos and I liked it’s pot in a pot design so it sits flat and stores easily.

Success! Thanks for sharing! I can relate to finding a wonderful “no-fuel” cooking device but finding the space for it is difficult! I have a Sun Oven that I love to use to bake bread, stews, casseroles, etc. I made space for it in our 5th wheel, but it would be too big I’m afraid for my minivan… Hmmm… unless I just took it once in a while and stored it in my “attic”… I think the Wonderbag would be worth the trouble of finding space for it… Those of us that are part-time can juggle gear differently… If I were full-time in my van like I was in the 5th wheel I’d look at things differently. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this! What is your Wonderbag filled with as the insulation? Hope it's not those synthetic bean bag pellets. I think I may try it with a cooler stuffed with pouches of kapok fiber - less likely to tip or spill in something square. Kapok is a good insulator if anyone is thinking of making their own.
