Charcoal is “activated” when it's heated to a very high temperature >600 degrees (>450 degrees w/the use of chemicals). This changes its internal structure making it more porous thus giving it a much larger surface area and making it more effective for things like color and scent removal. This is what "activated" means and how it's done.
@TheDragonshadow1231
@TheDragonshadow1231 2 года назад
Correct as per I mention very high 600-1000 degree with rapid cooling after done. Million or Trillion Porous you can seen on Microscope a small hole able to seen it and more adsorption effect.
@bakhtil
@bakhtil 2 года назад
what is the "chemical " used?
@LeeHill66
@LeeHill66 2 года назад
Thanks for the explanation, but aren't these temperatures reached in the process of making the charcoal? Why is it necessary to heat it again?
@TheDragonshadow1231
@TheDragonshadow1231 2 года назад
@@LeeHill66 Cause, after adsorption full so need to reboil to refresh the bind the charcoal again to make it work!. Until, a certain duration it can no longer hold after used for so long.

For the smoke stacks for factories and plants, I wonder if in combination with these charcoal filters, there could be a stage in the filter where electrostatic charge could be used to draw the carbon onto a surface. That way there would be less emissions, and also the carbon could be collected and used for other things.

I love this video❤️❤️❤️❤️. I had to make sure I was buying the right material. I've been using activated charcoal for many years in fact most Filipinos ha e them in their refrigerator and around their house so I grew up with it. But I further learned more about its many benefits during my BS Nursing college days. Is was a must class for Philippine BSN program. Back home in Philippines I can just easily make my own for my air filtration and for my other use. I have bad bad allergies of pollen, wools, dust and odors. My sense of smell is very sensitive.

Activated charcoal is a wonderful substance, I use it regularly to detox my body. With regards to water filtration: Activated charcoal will NOT filter out fluoride which is a neurotoxin added by governments to make people sick, fluoride also causes cancer. Fluoride is also the key ingredient in pharmaceutical antidepressants. So if you are drinking tap water you are being medicated weather you like it or not! I do not drink tap water as it almost always contains fluoride & chlorine. I buy reverse osmosis water to clean/prepare our foods in it When I use a TDS (total disolved solids) meter it has .0004 parts per million. I only drink distilled water as it is 100% pure and it is .0000 parts per million on the TDS meter.
@mbburry4759
@mbburry4759 3 года назад
Not seeing a sensible reason why multiple governments would ad something to water to purposely make citizens sick, that's pretty darn goofy on a world wide basis and doesnt make any sense. They do it in the name of public health, and it does make a huge difference to dental health. Does it have unintended side affects, maybe; is it absolutely crazy to filter it out for your consume, probably not. Is it added to water to specifically make you sick - NO! But if your the type who believes any and every conspiracy theory suppose anyone's opinion wont have you rethinking anything.

I have cooked charcoal of hickory and washed the powder and dried it. Bought calsium chloride. Going to "bake" it. In this case what temperature would be effective? Plan is to put it isolated so when metall glows the carbon will not get directly in contact with the glowing metall. I can’t measure the temperature but im quite confident to make it cook by over 4-600celsius long enough and stabile. I have spent 40 hrs on it already

Thank you so much for this education. I stumbled into your video in search of ways to deodorize and decolorize used vegetable oil for soap making. I was really confused by the difference between regular wood charcoal and "activated charcoal". I have now ordered the activated batch but in my impatience, I went to home depot and grabbed regular charcoal and started trying it out on a batch of oil. Questions: 1) Do you think the decolorization of used oil can be accelerated by combining charcoal with ascorbic acid? 2) How important is it to heat the oil upon addition of charcoal to achieve both deodorization and decolorization? I've learned a lot in a few hours and I'm grateful for people like you that took the time to share this knowledge on youtube.
@CharcoalHouse
@CharcoalHouse 3 года назад
Okay my understanding is that ascorbic acid is basically Vitamin C. I see no benefit in adding that for the filtration aspect of purifying the vegetable oil. Provided there is enough contact time between the charcoal and the vegetable oil it would effectively remove the color molecules for sure and the odor may be greatly reduced as well. The ideal charcoal for removing odors however, is a coconut shell activated charcoal as the pore structure of the particles is quite small. The small pore structure is perfectly designed for trapping and carrying out the small odor molecules. This does not mean that odors won't be removed using a hardwood activated charcoal, it simply means you may need to use more hardwood charcoal with a longer contact time to remove both the large color molecules as well as the small odor molecules. Furthermore, heat nor cold effect the way that charcoal works. As a result, we can safely say that if the oil is cooled it will likely add to increasing the contact time as cooled oil is thicker in viscosity that oil which has been heated. Whether one way is better than another is something you will have to trial for yourself. The difference between a regular charcoal, like what you may have purchased from Home Depot - I am assuming a wood based lump charcoal, and Activated Charcoal is that activated charcoal has been further processed with high temperatures of steam. This process will open the pore structure and increase the negative net charge of the charcoal thus creating an activated charcoal and giving it its characteristic pulling powder and adsorptive capacity to trap and remove contaminants, toxins and poisons.

Thank you for the video information of activating charcoal and it's uses. I had just watched a video about using hard wood charcoal (powdered) and washed with pure lemon juice as the acification processing, straining through filters and using 200 degree oven to dry. Though you stated in your video the need for 200 degree celcius = 392 F, was the acification using the lemon juice (citric acid) and the heat OK to activate the charcoal? In an emergency situation it seems as though, by your direction in text, just powderizing the hardwood charcoal would work. P.S. I was waiting to hear from Daniel about the poison neutralizing of the soil using charcoal. You may have covered that but you had mentioned "Daniel" would show such and such. Again I thank you for the information and your desire to please our Heavenly Father.

A good presentation.. enjoyed every minute of it.. I will get your book. I'm thinking of making my own "bamboo charcoal" for decoration as a hobby when I retire. What type of size of raw bamboo is required to produce those nice "bamboo charcoal" that you have at 8:14? I know hardwood/coconut husks, wood chips and bamboo would shrink during kilning.. would save me from making numerous experiments to find the right size if you could provide the answer.. TQ.

John, I’m trying to engineer a large water filter for a village in rural western Uganda. Last year I dug a well in the village, but there are so many heavy minerals in the water that people are not drinking from it very much, or even washing clothes because the water seems to separate the soap suds from itself. I do not think I can get or make large amounts of ‘activated’ charcoal, but I can get large amounts of locally made charcoal for cooking. What if I made a 50 gallon charcoal only filter, do you think it would help with the minerals?

That's a difficult question to answer. It would depend on what was in your water, and how much water you are using on a daily basis. Charcoal is like a waste receptacle. How quickly it gets filled up depends on how much waste the user has to get rid of. A household of one will be a lot different compared to a household of 5. Apologies if that wasn't what you were looking for. Feel free to text one us at the office for a faster response: (308)665-1566

So basically, hard wood charcoal does the same job as activated charcoal just not as fast? Obviously depending on the intended use faster may be better but in general it's not necessary if speed isn't essential?
