Arguably, the most important figure on your tax return is your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). AGI determines eligibility for a wide range of tax deductions and credits. In this video, you'll have a brief look into what goes into computing this pivotal figure. And if you need your AGI to e-file your current year's return, this video will show you where to find it.
2023 UPDATE:
The Adjustment for Educator Expenses has been increased to $300 ($600 if married filing jointly and both are educators) for 2022.
Schedule 1 has been significantly altered and expanded, with Adjustments listed on page 2 of the form. Line items have been added for many additional "miscellaneous adjustments."
The Tuition and Fees Deduction is no longer available.

I am glad you touched on it but I think modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) seems to be more important than adjusted gross income.. it can be so confusing..and then how do you arrive at MAGI
@TheTaxGeek

Yes, it is more important than AGI in many cases. The problem is that how MAGI is calculated is different for each tax benefit. Usually, MAGI is the AGI not considering how the benefit affects it. For example, The MAGI to determine whether Student Loan Interest is deductible is the AGI without including the Student Loan Interest. But MAGI can also be the AGI including usually nontaxable sources of income, such as nontaxable Social Security Benefits or excluded Foreign Earned Income.

You should consider a series on filing taxes from abroad. Though I'm not sure those things can even be simplified.

I will do some research on that subject and if I can present it in an "oversimplified" fashion, I'll do so. I do know, in certain circumstances some deadlines are extended.

@@TheTaxGeek they are. I honestly wasn't even aware that I had to file until recently. Didn't realize that married filing seperately threshold was only 5$. The rules are so complicated.

@@TheTaxGeek Hello Tax Geek! Since the social security and medicare withdrawal taxes are withdrawn from our check but still included for in our adjusted gross income. Is it like being double taxed for ssi and medicare tax?
