Amylase most commonly ordered together with lipase in the diagnosis of pancreatitis
It is secreted by
1. Pancreas : pancreatic amylase
2.Salivary Glands : Salivary amylase
Routine testing methods won’t be able to differentiate pancreatic and salivary component of the amylase that is tested. Hence the levels are amylase in blood tests are not specific. Infact lipase is a better test when compared to amylase in the diagnosis of pancreatitis.
Normal range of amylase: 28 to 100 U/L

How to interpret abnormal results ?
Levels in pancreatitis needs to elevated more than 3 times the upper limit to diagnose pancreatitis. Usually it needs to be correlated with lipase levels, which is a more specific test for the diagnosis of pancreatits.
How are levels in non pancreatic conditions. ?
Levels of amylase are elevated in non pancreatic conditions, however they are usually less than than three times the upper range
For the diagnosis of pancreatitis it should be correlated with lipase levels. Infact lipase is more specific than amylase
