Brazilian here. I was taught by British Teachers only and I don't feel guilty for saying "I'm sorry." It is a lot more natural in comparison to the Brazilian Portuguese Language. Here we use "Sorry, my bad." , same as you, when we didn't mean to be mean, not meant to hurt anyone but somehow you find out you screwed up. That's normal, at least in my view. Never met a British person I didn't like a lot. You are truly special people. Sometimes it almost seems like British people are sorry for their own existence, if know what I mean. If that's the case, STOP. Go look at yourself in the mirror, realize you are from one of the greatest people in the world. Stylish, you do look stuck up, but you're not. You are warm people, perhaps more introverted than most people, but is that an issue? No it isn't . You enjoy preserving your individuality, nothing wrong with it. Land of the greatest writers, poets, etc Chin up, beat on your chest. Be proud of because GOD delivered to Parents this amazing human being YOU.

This question was asked in a recent Easy German episode and was misinterpreted. I thought it was because the concept isn't directly translated by the words. I feel that many speakers in this video misinterpreted it too. The concept of 'guitly pleasure' has more to do with embarrassment than guilt i.e. what do you do / like at is so embarrassing that you don't want to admit it (you feel 'guilty' because it's a secret) It's often something that other people would laugh at you for doing / liking.

The lady at 2:20 is spot on not only from the perspective of a foreigner observing the English (as well as the British in general), but also from that of a person with a similar disposition. Humor isn't merely a defense, but also an effective weapon against the forces of misery.

People around the world often say about famous English humour, that they have a great sense of humor. And another one is that probably for American people English is associated with evil heroes or bad guys, I can assume that from the movies they make, but I must notice that these heroes are always very charismatic smart and attractive😉

English stereotypes seem to have lots in common with Japanese stereotypes. Bad teeth, overly polite and apologetic, love for fish (fish & chips/sushi) and tea/matcha, bizarre sense of humor, not to mention so many eerie parallels. Both island nations, have a royal family, drive on the left side of the road, drive vintage taxis, are good at queuing, had a feudal system (knights/samurais/castles), a colonial past, complicated relationships with their neighbors (bullied angry drunk neighbor to their west (Korea & Ireland), and cocky powerful neighbor in the mainland (China & France) who significantly influenced their high culture (Chinese & French literally make up a huge chunk of academic Japanese and English vocabulary). Both raided by badass warriors (Vikings and Mongols), love rock music and curry, need their alcohol to say what they truly feel, and today are the second-largest economy in their continents. Also, very weird sense of fashion. People either dress too properly or modestly, or have a very quirky, bizarre sense of fashion.

I don't know much about Canada but my impression is that you're right. It is still an English thing to say 'sorry' when someone bumps into you. Of course, not everyone does it, and whether it's really 'politeness' is another matter.
