We tend to think about the interference vs. non-interference engines in overhead cam engines only. An old school pushrod engine can also bend valves if the old school timing chain breaks.

@ETCG1
@ETCG1 2 года назад
How exactly would you do that if the timing belt is broken? To do what you suggest would involve setting up each cylinder individually to do the leak down. A complete waste of time in my view. If it runs after you install the new belt, move on. If not, get ready to pull the heads. No matter what, you still have to replace the belt. Thanks for the comment.

The advantage or building an interference engine is that the manufacturer has more freedom in shaping the piston crown and more freedom in deciding how much lift the cam has. When Ford decided to use the Nissan VG30E/VG33E engine in the Mercury Villager, they wanted a non-interference engine. To do it, they reduced valve lift 1mm compared to the Nissan Hardbody/Frontier engine variant.
@austinpfoster
@austinpfoster 2 года назад
I imagine with a VTEC equipped engine, the engine being under higher load may increase the chance of an interference event in the event of a timing belt/chain failure. The more aggressive VTEC cam profile does result in greater valve opening duration and lift.
@jblyon2
@jblyon2 2 года назад
This is true. Many engines are non-interference without whatever form of variable timing they are equipped with. Break the belt/chain under relatively normal operation and you'll likely end up fine, but if you're far into the variable timing you're having a really bad day.

I had the timing belt break on my '91 CRX Si out a back road. I coasted it off the side of the road, came back the next day and put on a new timing belt. Fired right up and I drove it home. I was pretty nervous up until it started, I expected to crank it and just hear crunching.
@girthy10incher23

If VTEC is engaged when the belt breaks its probably game over, otherwise its a good chance everything is fine, working at a Honda dealer we saw way more cars with no damage than those with damage, but there are exceptions like older DOHC Preludes and anything with a CVCC engine and this is subject to change with newer engines coming out!

I've experienced that the timing belt breaking has a huge chance of not causing any damage. Ive always thought under normal conditions, when the timing belt snaps, the valve springs immediately push the cams the where all the valves are mostly closed and the bottom half of engine immediately stops rotating... now if timing jumps, then there's a huge chance of damage occurring
@kiefershanks4172
@kiefershanks4172 2 года назад
It likely wouldn't just cause bent valve(s). Just with a little imagination you can guess the valve guides could be damaged/leak oil after, the piston(s) could have been damaged, etc. But as you have said, there may not be damage due to sheer luck of the valve springs keeping the valves shut just enough to avoid contact. But the higher the RPM (the more momentum your cams have to overcome the valve spring force) the more likely a timing belt or chain failure on an interference engine will cause damage.

On mine I got lucky. (it's actually a 97 isuzu rodeo). But it started running a little strange, as if the belt might have jumped a tooth; and I popped the hood and seen an idler pully drilling a hole through the cover like a hole saw and was just about to finish cutting through.. (or maybe it's the water pump pulley, which is driven by the timing belt). So I quickly turned it off, and now I just need to pull it all apart and do the full timing belt job. So I got just lucky enough to catch it, right before it completely broke. I feel pretty happy about it.

Recently my Accord wagon, non vtec, had the cam seize while going about 40mph, which broke the cam sprocket key. Timing still worked, the starter turned the engine over fine. Upon turning over the engine by hand😬 so I pulled the head anyhow to see the carnage, much to my glee the valves barely knocked the carbon off 2 of the 4 - 310,000 mile pistons! Now was the bolts getting addressed and I got lucky the engine didnt crack and the easy fix was to take of the half of the screw that got stuck in the engine 'shave' the grooves in the holes bolt the screws to the block and TADA!!! Shes fine! I know its still a scary feeling after what happen and most would say maybe its a ticking time bomb but its been over a year and no issues. Ive had the car for about 5 years now and I love it! No more hard pulls tho just for my peace of mind, I think ill keep riding in that car till I`m told the horrible news "she needs a 'new' Engine/Transmission" which who know might be soon lucky ive been saving for about 2 years not sure what would take the TLs spot yet.

Hey Eric, I can totally agree with that "it can go either way...". MG Rover K series (never been sold in US, so you won't know - while not same as Honda, MG Rover had ties to Honda here in Europe and they do share some things from that partnership era. Also its K series but it has nothing to do with Honda K, It's belt DOHC,). Friend of mine had belt snapping while driving, ~ 3K rpm (so not really revving high but still wasnt idle) and pretty minor dmg... exhaust valves contacted on one or two cylinders but overall nothing. Same engine (type) in my car and on start up, on frikkin starter the belt merely jumped ~ 5 teeth.... and total carnage 3 or 4 exhaust valves decapitated (the valves snapped off the stem and dropped in the cyl and blocked the piston. one small dent in piston and head deck. One major dent from the snapped valve in both piston and head. few bent valves and CRACKED cyl sleeve.... yep that engine WAS done. Both head and bottom end. So no lottery ticket for me on that day :D

I got lucky on an Xterra, broke the belt at highway speed. I put a new belt on and it fired up and ran fine. Had an 03 Civic cam gear bolt back out and bent 1 valve. You can check for bent valves by checking each one for excessive play as it will be hung open. WHY doesn't interference engines have fly cut pistons to avoid this?

This is very interesting. Am I correct in presuming that if the cam(s), solely by virtue of the valve springs come to rest in a "safe" position is how damage is avoided? A non interference engine is a design where the the valves and piston never occupy the same space. If a timing belt/chain fails no damage happens. A interference engine the valves and piston do occupy the same space but at different time during the stroke, so if the belt/chain fails it is possible that they will hit and damage happens, or you can get lucky it doesn't. Hope that helps explain.

that wouldnt be a bad idea, assuming you have a good habit of doing a compression test at every change of the timing belt and in the event that one or more of your valves is ever so slightly nicked, it would still run but its ability to fully sit on its valve seat would be compromised and you would see that in a compression test

Here's what I believe personally, on automatic it typically wouldn't damage it unless somehow it did of course through momentum and especially through rough housing with the engine. On manuals almost indefinitely I believe it will happen, unless it's in neutral. Why? Well sort of self-explanatory. The car is going down the road and gear with the resistance pushing the engine being the clutch and everything else moving it so it will continue to turn the engine until it smacks valves. On automatics since it's just fluid resistance, theoretically unless there's more momentum enough to turn the crankshaft more than it shouldn't continue rotating so speaking. I've seen a lot of larger engines breaking the timing belt or messing the timing chain up where would bend valves rather than a small engine and I believe it's through momental Force.

A lot of times what happens is the belt snaps and it gets wrapped around the crankshaft pulley and is able to slow its momentum, therefore preventing it from continuing motion and hitting valves. Another interesting thing to note is sometimes a serpentine belt failure can wreck your timing system. I've seen cases where the serpentine belt snapped and got wrapped up with the crankshaft pulley where it eventually found its way inside the timing cover and caused a mess inside there.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. I think you get lucky or you don't. Thanks for the comment.

I lost a car due to blown timing belt- f'ed up the whole engine. Yeah, it sucked. And the timing belt didn't even have much mileage on it (80k), Any future cars I purchase will have timing chain.

4th to comment.😜 Okay Eric, I KNEW what they were but WHAT/HOW, engineering wise MAKES engines either way?? Why DOES Honda/Acura MAKE interference engines?
@ETCG1
@ETCG1 2 года назад
No one sets out to make an interference engine. But if you want the engine to perform, it will likely have a higher compression ratio and a higher lift and duration camshaft. The closer the valves and pistons get together, the more chances they have to 'interfere'. I hope that clears that up for you. Thanks for the comment.

@@ETCG1 maybe I'm not understanding your point here. Of course they set out to make an interference engine. More valve lift and bigger valves means more power. They know the risk and make that tradeoff.
@ETCG1

@@MrTexasDan There is little to no risk if you maintain your engine properly.

What do you think about people who say if the valves are bent the pistons have to be replaced? I’ve reused hundreds and hundreds of pistons with valve strikes with zero problems.

Seeing how the belt was tied around the crank pulley, could that have helped save the engine, as I'm guessing the TL is an auto (thinking of torque converter vs clutch). Would being an auto and having the belt wind itself around the pulley like that also contribute to saving the engine, compared to if it was a manual?

I don't think that had anything to do with it. Keep in mind I've cranked the engine over several times since the belt broke. The cams landed in just the right spot. It's as simple as that. Thanks for the comment.

Eric good day to you, I need info about a volvo s60 if timing not set right of cause engine will not start but would it be interference. Thank

Pretty much if your timing is off in an interference engine theres a good chance, especially if you ran it for a while, you’ll have a broken motor, namely bent valves and maybe even ruined pistons.

Not in my experience. Thanks for your comment.

@@ETCG1 its rare, your timing has to be off first of all so thats already very rare in itself. Only seen it twice but both times the keyweys were either damaged or just not there.

If you had to “guess” on the odds that the valves would survive a timing belt failure on a J series engine what have you seen in the past?

I don't guess. I just install a new belt and see if it runs.

I think It depends if it's a Manuel transmission or an auto. An Automatic car shuts off and the engine stops. A manual transmission cars shuts down but since the driveline is still turning the motor well it chews itself up. Kind of like a money shift. Just my theory..

I think before committing hundreds of bucks to what might be a pointless timing belt replacement it'd be a good idea to do pull the spark plugs and use an inspection camera to see if any valves are bent or pistons dented.

The belt broke on my Hyundai, and I was lucky. I put a new quality kit into it, however, 200 miles later it broke again...I was not lucky at all. Valves were bent, valve guides were cracked and rockers were snapped. I found the idler pulley bolt was loose despite me doing it up with a torque wrench. Anyway, while playing with the offending pulley it jammed up solid hard, after that I never made it jam again. So to this day, I do not know why this happened... While the pulley was loose enough to be an issue in the long term, it was as far as I could tell doing its job. At any rate, an eBay head came up and all was well for not too much cost or effort.

Some timing belt kits come with garbage pulleys, bearings, tensioners, and fasteners. I don't know of anyone who likes to gamble on aftermarket timing sets. Some enthusiasts buy timing sets with bits from known OEM suppliers to get the real thing at a discount price. For example, VW/Audi get a lot of timing components from Continental and INA.

@@skylinefever I cannot remember the belt however the suspect pully was an Ina one, so it should have been OK. Hyundai dealer parts were silly money at the time in the UK.

Likewise, a non-interference engine is no guarantee that you're safe. It isn't very common, but you can get unlucky. Also, a non-interference can become an interference engine, with certain modifications. For example, a more aggressive camshaft or higher compression pistons can do that.
