The reason it is called frequency modulation (FM), is because you are using the second oscillator to completely change the tone of the first oscillator and not just modulate the pitch as what is done with an LFO as shown in the video. So in theory you could get sounds that are impossible to recreate on normal synths that don't use FM Synthesis. An example is the E. Piano on the Yamaha DX7.

FM = vibrato. In other words, vibrato and frequency modulation is exactly the same thing. However, if the vibrato goes into the audio range, i.e. above 20Hz, then we start perceiving it as a tone. And if an oscillator goes below audio range, i.e. below 20Hz, we tend to discern the separate cycles, and musicians call it a vibrato. By the way, if there's just one oscillator by itself and it goes below the audio range, i.e. below 20Hz. We still hear it, but we hear clicks, or rhythm. So yes, we can hear the oscillator well below audio range. Now, term FM (frequency modulation) is used when we have two oscillators. You can look up what FM is in radio transmission. You have some fixed frequency carrier wave, and then you send a signal through it, by modulating the frequency of it. It basically makes the carrier wave behave like a slinky. That's the best explanation I can give. I mean, not the slinky going down the stairs, just a slinky placed horizontally, and oscillating. Then you have AM (amplitude modulation), which is modulating the amplitude of the carrier wave. So the signal oscillates between being quite and loud. Musicians tend to call it a tremolo. In fact, any sound imaginable is just AM, amplitude modulation. Sound is nothing else, like change of the amplitude over time, that 's it. Nothing more. Things like timbre and pitch are what our brain interprets from the amplitude changes over time.
