Do you want to learn How to Process Emotions and improve your Mental Health? Sign up for a Therapy in a Nutshell Membership, you'll get access to all of Emma’s courses, workbooks, and a Live Q and A with 100’s of exclusive videos: courses.therapyinanutshell.co...
The more precisely you describe a problem, or an emotion, the greater ability you have to do something about it. In this video you’ll learn the difference between stress, anxiety and worry because knowing the difference can give you a ton of tools to change your relationship with all three.
Anxiety is, in essence, your reaction to the perception of being in danger. Especially physical danger, so if you were the roof of a skyscraper, your brain would perceive the potential danger and trigger the limbic system to send out a super loud warning to you in the form of thoughts and physical sensations of anxiety.
Anxiety Serves a Function
Emotions aren’t just “bad things that happen to you”, emotions serve a function. I go into depth on the function of emotions in my “How to Process Emotions course”. But the emotion of anxiety is meant to help keep us safe from danger, to motivate us to move away from the edge of cliffs, or to stay away from venomous snakes and spiders.
And to make emotions powerful motivating forces, they aren’t just in our mind, they’re in our bodies too. Stress, Anxiety and Worry aren’t the same thing, they’re three different aspects of our Fear response. And when we know the difference, we can tailor different skills and tools to work through them. Just like with people, when we know their names, we can learn how to relate to them.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

My main worry was worrying about getting anxious. Not much else seems to bother me. The anxious feeling is so powerful I’d avoid situations where I think it may occur.
@Joey007ist
@Joey007ist 10 месяцев назад
See this was always my concern too. I have a hard time looking at anxiety as a core emotion to respond to. Aren’t we responding to fear, like isn’t fear the core emotion of anxiety? There may not be a threat present, but our body thinks there is.

I completely understand how overpowering anxiety can be, and the way it leads to avoiding certain situations. It's a common challenge, but there are effective ways to manage it. If you're open to it, we can explore strategies together to help you cope with anxiety and regain control over those situations. Remember, you're not alone in this, and seeking support can make a significant difference.

@@AtortAerials, To look at your body and what it’s doing. I felt tingling in my feet, my elbows, my shoulder came forward, I inhaled. I labeled the feeling. I noticed the trigger, which was watching the video. I wrote those down. I reinforced that walking on skyscrapers is not really happening. I started to breath deeply. I can feel my body changing. My breathing is deeper, my shoulders are relaxing backward. Now I will try to soothe myself in little ways. This is what I’ve learned from cognitive behavior therapy. It works most times. My advice is to starting writing down your feelings, be really forgiving of yourself, join her course. It sounds good.

It’s funny, because I came across this video while looking for some advice. When I started the video, my anxiety was at a 7 or 8….rough day. When the “anxiety video” started, it actually made me laugh and within a minute, my anxiety was down to about a 2. What they were doing was so ridiculously, stupidly, unnecessarily dangerous that it made me remember that I’m good, I’m stressed out, but I’m ok…and I’m certainly not those dinguses. I know that wasn’t the desired outcome, but it was really helpful for me! :)

My anxiety was at a zero at a beginning. After watching the videos, I thought it was still at a zero. I don’t feel empathy and have a hard time being in touch with my somatic sensations. I had thought of worry as being thoughts with no emotion behind them, anxiety as being thoughts with worry behind them, and stress as when those feelings actually do get intense enough for me to feel in my body. But since you said worry was part of anxiety, I realized that since I had a couple thoughts of worry pop up in my head while watching the videos, I’d rate my anxiety going up from zero to one. Really good psychoeducation you’re doing! I look forward to watching the next part

I started off this video as already having anxiety but wanting to get away from specific thoughts for a moment, so it was at around a 7. But after watching the videos, it rose to 9. I felt really scared and wanted to turn away from the screen in hopes that I wouldn't be able to see if someone was falling. But yes this video did help a lot in giving me more awareness of anxiety and how to deal with it just by allowing myself to feel it and describe it instead of always trying to avoid it altogether. Hoping to learn more from this anxiety course and slowly but surely get better!

the crazy thing about this video for me was that i was really anxious, angry really, about a "friend" disrespecting me online parading as some "friendly ribbing". in the middle of my raging about it to my girlfriend i stumbled across this video and could actually feel the anger inside me physically change from anger stress to fear stress. it was incredible! i felt the edge come off the anger and just turn soft but left the fear. a very moving experience i don't think i'll ever forget. i like this woman's bedside manner. and you know what? that's the most important thing about mental health help. finding someone you can trust and feel comfortable with. thanks, Lady!

How could you see a coping mechanism to someone who’s not only absolutely traumatized with serious health issues. The person doesn’t get trapped on memories of trauma event.. the event per say repeats, constantly. Not a trigger, not a worry or anxiety only. You’re amazing!!!! Keep up the extraordinary work!! Anxiety & nerve thoughts are like being in a one way tunel. Come out of it, and go in a better rail track of being practive and sorring your fears and worry. Worry is the fuel she said. Mine was all physical feelings and tension. 6 months its took me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Its hard but dont let it master you. Tell yourself off and also praise yourself for overciming fear and emotiions. Do slow exposure therapy, play music its helped me a lot. And Emma of course...she's great. Dont avoid yr sensations, just do. Change your thought pattern. Talk it through. Write it all down. You will get there but dont rush it ok, it takes time.

I’m a 3-4 starting. I’m an artist and photographer…I was interested in the visual effects of the images that were at the top of the skyscraper…so I think I was mostly visually captivated and also viewing on my phone vertically so the video was even smaller and I wasn’t very immersed in the reality of the scenario…also I knew that I was going to watch something stressful so I think my mind/body was more prepared…i probably only went to a 5 tops and that was toward the end where the man on the bike was over the ledge. I do have chronic stress and an anxiety disorder…along with ADHD and my executive functioning challenges do often instigate anxiety which can lead to overwhelm and at times a kind of a meltdown of sorts… I have been working with my doctor to medicate my symptoms effectively… I enjoyed this content. I’ve been working on my body awareness when I’m triggered and my joining group therapy has really helped with processing my childhood trauma and understanding what’s going on in my body and mind when I’m experiencing anxiety. I was down around 1 before the video and went up to 7 or 8 afterward. If I hadn't seen all of the clips before, I know my anxiety level would have been higher. I'm wearing a Fitbit , so I know my pulse went up about 10 beats. Seeing those clips first brought on recollections of times I've been working in precarious high places, but then my brain kinda shut down. I don't want to get too graphic in describing my physical sensation but... I felt a strong tingling in my perineum - what's called a "sphincter-tightening moment". I also felt my man bits trying to retreat into my body. It's a little different than my usual anxiety reaction, which locates in my bowels, but still in the same vicinity. That was a valuable observation. Thanks much!

Been off for two months and it’s been extended. My manager is a huge trigger and I am not sure I will ever be able to get to the point that I will be able to work for that same manager.

For a lot of people just talking about anxiety does nothing for them because many around the world have gone through very serious mental/emotional trauma. So, they end up creating a wall of emotional protection called getting very nervous. That is the way of the body releasing the stress of anxiety. Unfortunately, doctors just numb you down with medication which never fixes the problem.

5. Something "funny" is that I just came back from the gym and I know I am anxious right now and the video made me a little bit more anxious, however being tires from my exercise routine "hid" my anxiety, so I feel more tired than anxious right now.

0 before the video; gradual increase up to 2-3 at the end of the video. But I'm on sertraline for about 4 months. Before it'd be probably from 3 to 6. I really like your channel, your advice is useful and well-presented.

Started at a 4 and went to 5 after the video. The height thing didn’t bother me directly, what bothered me is the people taking those risks wouldn’t have to deal with the trauma of seeing someone fall to their death. They never count the risks they’re putting others in. That said I’ve got harm OCD and just got off work. I was 7-8 for 9 hours of my 12 hour day. The feeling most recognizable is the tension in my upper back, the feeling of stomach acid in the bottom of my throat, and light headed dizziness.

I got severe postpartum anxiety with panic attacks when I had my daughter who is now 10 months old. Everyday all day is a struggle. Trying to take the time to work on myself while taking care of the baby and a 3 year old is the hardest thing I’ll ever do. I know things will get better and I just gotta push through one day at a time. Sometimes I see my panic attacks as a positive because when I get the feeling of doom it kind of gives me a better outlook on life and that it’s not promised and to slow down and enjoy everyday ❤ I hope everyone who is struggling with mental illness finds peace and a way to cope and enjoy life again ♥️ god bless you all 🙏

Found something on my body today that set my mind spinning. I'll contact my GP about it but like always it's the not knowing what it is and jumping to conclusions as well as the waiting for a diagnosis. My mind always goes to the big C.

@Mopantsu Did you contact your GP? Gentle nudge to do it if you haven't. Sometimes we avoid because of anxiety and end up worried much longer than needed.

I love your analogies to help me understand anxiety, and how it affects us. My anxiety is caused by worries about the future. I’ve been through 2 1/2 years of therapy, and thought I was making progress, so I decided to end my therapy sessions. Since then, things have gone south. My worries are all very legit, and no easy answers to resolve them. It would be nice to accept the things I worry about, and be confident I can handle situations if and when they become reality. I know other’s can relate. Feeling stuck in a situation that there is no way out of. I have a lot to work on, as this has taken control of my life, and affecting me physically. Hoping your Course can help me, even a little would be so awesome. Thanks in advance Emma ! ☺️💜☺️

My initial anxiety level was 2 or 3, then after the video it went up to 8? maybe. So yeah, it's true, I'm overthinking things a lot. I tend to see the negative side of things, and it deterred me from taking actions to build the life that I want. I even started to think that it's not good to want the things that I want. And it's not just about thoughts. The feeling that's always present in the background of your mind, or the world, it's somehow made me stifled, fearful. And now I have an inkling of what is actually going on.

Okay, so I started with 8 and then I watched her short video and it went up at least one notch, maybe two so now a 9-10. I felt it where I always do - my gut. My thoughts were "hell no!" and how crazy are these people?! My emotions were related to fear and panic.

anxious (adj.) 1620s, "greatly troubled by uncertainties," from Latin anxius "solicitous, uneasy, troubled in mind" (also "causing anxiety, troublesome"), from angere, anguere "to choke, squeeze," figuratively "to torment, cause distress" (from PIE root *angh- "tight, painfully constricted, painful").

I constantly feel like I’m forgetting something extremely important. It’s always something mundane like finishing an article. But it always feels like I’m about to start a massive fire. When I wake up, if I have work I get very impatient and can’t get out of the house fast enough and it just gets worse until I leave. I get to work about 45 minutes early everyday. Im autistic adhd and bipolar. I remember having anxiety my whole life. Used to chew on my fingers till they would bleed. Apparently it was super obvious and despite a diagnosis at 8, multiple teachers and schools kicking me out it was never addressed until I was about 30.

It'll be OK, you're not alone. You are not responsible, you just suffer from it. Whatever happens, there will always be someone by your side. Take the time you need to recover from your symptoms. You will find the light again.

I'm currently experiencing seasonal affected disorder which has affected my anxiety disorder immensely. I wonder why do we need anxiety and what my life would be like without it having not avoided things and being confident in doing more things. But I understand we need anxiety for awareness to keep us safe from danger. In my case, it's like a malfunction with this ethic as I get anxious of minor situations as well as major ones (which being anxious of is more understandable). At this time of year my mindset or mood has been tampered with and I'm convinced that I'm going through a dark phase where I constantly worry about something terrible happening like a ticking time bomb. Like the other guy said in the comments, I get anxious about being anxious. I over think things and it's more difficult to control my thoughts even though there is nothing big going on in my life or at work. Even going to work can be difficult. In a typical panic attack, I experience nausia with retching spasams as I've always hated throwing up and afraid of it. I lose concentration, adrenaline flows through my body, my heart rate would go up and I'd feel conered in my brain with immense fear.

Hearing the question “Right?” over and over again causes me anxiety. You’re asking to bring me along. I pump the brakes to ask myself “IS that right?” And you move forward without me.
