In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle discusses different virtues of character that can be acquired by making a habit out of doing virtuous activities. One of these virtues of character is bravery, the intermediate state between cowardice and rashness. Cowardice is the deficiency of bravery while rashness is the excess. How to perform brave actions, however, is also dependent upon the context. Aristotle also talks about bravery not so much as the absence of fear but acting despite fear. Furthermore, Aristotle notes that brave people are those who uphold other brave people. #aristotle #nicomacheanethics #bravery

Hey man, I came across your channel and love how easily digestible your content is, especially for someone like me who is just dipping their toes into Philosophy. Great work!

I postulate that intelligence and other capabilities allow a rash action to become brave. In your previous video, you used talking to someone who you are attracted to as an example. An intelligent person can approach with the same level of planning as a less intelligent person, but because they are intelligent enough to compensate for less planning, they are being brave. The less intelligent person needs to spend more time planning or they are being rash. Other capabilities have the same effect. A special forces soldier going to rescue someone from a warzone is brave. Someone with no training attempting the same feat is rash. Alternatively, it is cowardice to be able to rescue that person with those capabilities and choose not to do so.

HMS glowworms Captain was posthumously awarded the VC, on part, due to the recommendation of the German officer who sunk hss ship for the award. Id say that covers your second example of brave people recognizing other brave people, while ignoring what superiors (cowards) might think of their actions.

About the cheating part. I always follow this mantra - "Its okay to cheat on your girlfriend/wife but never cheat on your workouts."
