so what makes surface drives work, I assume they introduce aeration on purpose as half the prop is out of the water?

The reason they so efficient is actually due to reducing drag on the prop

yes they introduce aeration as at lower speeds the whole prop is in the water and effectively it has to much grip. so they allow the prop to spin faster by allowing aeration to the top of the prop as when the boat is at planning speeds the top half of the prop is out of the water.
