Dear Dr Cohen, given how aggressive cervical cancer is and our desire to increase the life expectancy of patients with cervical cancer; should we now have 48 hour admission for investigation and surgery by 72 hours? Most cancers of the cervix are highly malignant tumours. With appendicitis we operate within 24 hours. Appendicitis patients at sea, I have heard, were put on an antibiotics until the ship reached land and they could be admitted to hospital. So they are not not actually in need of such urgent surgery. If these patients receive urgent treatment; in my view, cancer of the cervix warrants urgent treatment also; rather than a 2 week wait and then staging, as it is spreading. Not defending smoking (there are plenty enough reasons to stop smoking), but there is only correlation between smoking and cervical cancer and no known causation. Seeing as it’s a virus that is common in more sexually active women… lifestyle could very much explain the correlation.
