What is CHERT ? (with examples)

CHERT is a type of rock that is made of silica. It is associated with ancient marine environments and resembles some other silica-based rocks. However, it is microscopically crystalline so you won’t see crystals like you do with Quartz crystals. You will find a smooth rock that resembles obsidian but forms a totally different way.

Thanks for all these great examples of chert. I now realize that one photographic sample in a guidebook is not enough when hunting for this wily rock!

Yes you have a good spectrum of chert it is pretty common you see it just about everywhere 🐝 does not go well in asphalt high percentages cause pop-ups 😁😉🐝

Interesting 🧐 I can identify flint but then learned the word chert today & found this informative video to tell me what chert means. (It’s a great name for my next dog. Chert!) So, petrified wood?🪵 It’s chert?
