What IS cinematic?
Excuse the slight change in setup, shooting on a different camera for this one. Man it has been busy! Which is great for freelancing but not so great for making these videos.

b-roll shot on a gimbal at 240fps is the only kind of cinematic footage that I will accept.. everything else is meaningless..

Just discovered this channel and I’m loving it! For me, “cinematic” is pretty much what you stated: light, composition and camera movement,and all of those three aspects being carefully decided before the shot to serve the story. And I reckon that’s the difference between a videographer (who captures what’s in front of them without planning), and a cinematographer, who plan the shot to reinforce the emotions.

Ahhhh yes. Let's just shoot 60fps on a gimble to get that 'cinematic look' Also I agree. Lighting, composition and movement. Although I would say that colour is also essential and separate from lighting to some extent. Great vid Smith!

I'd (personally) extend the definition to anything where the decisions made behind the camera look deliberate and lend themselves to the style of the video -- an example of this is the latest Billie Eilish video for "Therefore I Am." Shot on a smartphone, uses exclusively natural lighting, and yet it manages to be cinematic because they planned out the camera movement, had a great location, and captured a performance that suits the style.

Thanks for bringing this up, I agree with you, the word is overused today on RU-vid. For me, it has to do with the intention of the camera placement, movement, composition, to capture the emotion of the scene. I just recently found your channel, and I’ve learned a lot so thank you so much!

Cinema is a dream. And dreams are not real. Screenshots in ratio 1:1 from films, old oil paintings also can be very cinematic. It is all about feel/mood. Natural lighting is never cinematic. Anamorphic look is cinematic because we don't have vertical bokeh smear in real life. ARRI color science is cinematic because we don't see those colors in real life. Motion blur (and slow motion without motion blur) is cinematic because we don't see world in slow motion in real life. Some graphic novels / comics are very cinematic. Cinema is a dream.

You be tend to use the word a lot - always in a context which makes it meaningful! And only that makes sense. There are not many connecting factors between the Maltese Falcon, French nouvelle vague of the 1960ies and Disney - perhaps this creates the importance of 24 fps - even if hardcore video gamers don't appreciate that so much. One thing making all the difference between stills boys and cinema people - stills is about pixels and specs, cinema is about looks! That's certainly a reason why I enjoy watching your content so much! In a way the encouragement to use my vintage and mf lenses to show off their flaws is fun - and does not negatively impact my click count on flickr

I think what most new filmmakers notice after trying to emulate the shots they want is that they cannot do the same dramatic lighting with the same pace as the movies. I think they notice a separation between realistic lighting and the lighting used in their consumed media and the easiest difference is that one is cinema and the rest are not. For me, cinematic means the deliberate application of tools to assist in telling the story. This can be done by deviation from reality, to better evoke a mode, or by adhering to reality to assume an unbiased stance on the recording. I think all cinema is both because the camera directs our focus by being in a position instead of another and therefore there is always a subjective deviation from what is reality. So what is cinematic? The deliberate application of film tools to direct attention. That the most BS out of the water explanation but in terms of creativity, I think it's very important to know the traditional styles of those equipment but also be ready to adjust or even completely reject them for the sake of the story to be told.

The short way is to ask, "does this look like something from a commercial release narrative movie?" Yes, it's broad, but it covers the fact that most commercial release movies are directed, shot and edited to a certain standard, and more often than not by people with extensive training and industry experience. Those are the people to look to, not the dweebs on youtube doing whip pan transitions and super slow motion.

Cinematic for me has to do with painting, (but not with light, as Vittorio Storaro for instance, but more like three-strip Technicolor ;-) Of course, that may be because I’ve been cinematographically brought up with film but digital sticks to reality too much for me to trigger the dream, (also I miss the « orange-y » warmth and my skin tones to have a little « blood » in them -without have to use a Rosco Cosmetic Rouge ;-) I’m that old-fashioned that I’m the kind of stubborn guy who will claim that true photography can only be black and white, (ok, I’ll admit I stole that line from Elliott Erwitt -talk about hardcore 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree, the term has been overused for too long especially for the wrong reasons. I wont claim to know what the exact formular for cinematic footage is though. I feel like it has to gel perfectly and invisibly with the story and tone of a feature movie. Otherwise I have no other pre-requisites for its classification.

its a feeling when at least some of the many things exist high enough in the picture ... thats it and there are some things with a high impact like a Black Mist Filter, Letterbox, Skintones with the right hue und ire level, goog dynamik range, Hollywoodactor ...
