Understand more about clipping in car audio applications in this educational video where we discuss clipped signals and amplifier clipping. To prevent/avoid clipping, we recommend doing the following:
1. Choose the right amp
2. Set the gain properly
3. Avoid the bass boost
One of the most frequent causes of damaged subwoofers is clipping. Avoid damaging your subwoofers and voiding warranties by properly installing your car audio equipment.

When you are setting the gain on your amplifier, be sure the bass knob is turned all the way up. Once it is set, you can max out the bass knob for full bass or you can turn it down to decrease the bass level.

You have to use an O-Scope, SMD DD-1 or a Digital Multi-Meter to find out where best to set your gain. We have a video explaining how to set your gain using a multi-meter.

Bass boost is essentially a gain for a specific frequency my dude, that's why if you use it you ajusts your gain afterward and use the boosted frequency to check for clipping

I also have the 105bii. When I first got it I thought the only thing an AC sine wave on the scope would show me was clipping. It wasn't until I tested an Alpine 149bt that I discovered what distortion looked like. Shortly thereafter I found out what heavy noise looks like coming out of a JL XD1000/5v2. I wasn't aware, until now, how much valuable information a proper scope provides. Aside from clipping, distortion, and noise, I hope I don't discover a fourth anomaly but it would be cool if you re-did this video to show everything a sine wave can show you aside from just clipping. It might help a lot of people.

We would recommend setting the gain first, then the bass boost. You may find that when you start messing with the bass boost, you may need to then back the gain down to compensate.

To some extent it depends on how an amp recovers from clipping and what frequency range is involved. Full range, clipping is a crackling sort of sound, mostly.

Very good info video. My opinion, if you can get a hold of a DD1 or an o-scope, use it. It's the best way to set gain. Sure you can use your ears but you can maximize it more with the right equipment.
@randomtube8226

A tip may be to use one amplifier per subwoofer. Also use an amplifier with twice the rated power of your subs and supply twice the amount of amps or more to your amplifiers max sinewave ratings. This makes sure that you are feeding your amplifier and vehicle with enough power and reduce possible dimming lights. Avoid using capacitors if possible. As they are mainly used as a filter for your battery and dont supply any extra power. Also make sure to have the big 3 installed when installing your amplifiers. Theres videos explaining what the big 3 is and how to install it yourself. But taking these precautions will allow you to have plenty room for proper tuning and clean power resulting in longevity of your system and many years of enjoyment.

Your headunit or amp could be going bad, could be a bad ground maybe, even the fuel pump going bad or the alternator going bad. It could be a number of things. You need to isolate each part of the system when it happens to see if it is the audio equipment and then go from there.

Distortion is not detected by the human ear easily. If you turn up your sound system and the amplifier clips, it means you need a more powerful amplifier to get the loudness you want without taking the amp to its limits. Do not play it past clipping.

I have the opposite problem - my sub plays fine but my woofers and tweeters clip at high volumes. I discovered that direct connection to the amplifier instead of using [cheap] crossovers solved the issue, but I'm still not positive why the crossovers would be at fault. Do they modify signals? or do they only separate them?

Go to a local shop. Have them set your gains with o scope or a DD1. You be shocked on how much your ear is off. If you set it by ear. Some times you can gain 5db just by setting your gains the correct way.

QUESTION: What does it mean when on the oscilloscope at the top of every wave my amp shows a thick crinkly snow-like cap as if a mountain top covered in snow?? I'm setting my gains before clipping and it constantly shows these snow-top mountain like waves. If I were to guess, it would equate to a dirty 8,000 RMS watts but before I jump to conclusions I thought I should ask the AMP PRO (that's you!). I have screenshots of it I could email you if helpful. THANK YOU Guys!

if only all these damn car audio companies would put a clipping indicator on their bass knobs, the world would be a better place, 2 ways I know this can be done and they aren't BS, the circuit can either compare the input and output signals to make sure they are the same, or it can monitor the amplifier's rail voltages and if the output starts to hit the rail voltage it signals clipping,

What he didn't say is that whatever he recommends doesn't always guarantee no clipping. The problem is with the music that is being put out and horribly loud mastered nowadays. I recommend using a Hi-Fi car player that supports ReplayGain tags on your audio files, because that my friends, is the thing that is DEFINITELY going to fix clipping issues. At a interesting sidenote, you also don't need to change the volume from track to track because all have the same audio levels. I honestly couldnt listen music without anymore. The clipping in pretty much every track gets even more apparent once you used ReplayGain before...

I've been of this school of thought for some time... but, ask the question: why then does a guitar amp/speaker not blow immediately? the guitar amp lives in a distorted and clipping state. this does not damage the driver. why? there are far more dynamics and physics going on here than can be explained by the simple example. music is complex and harmonics vs power output vs clipping just isn't that simple. we know that heat kills subs and other drivers. heat is caused by multiple factors. clipping does not cause heat in the driver like we think.

I know this video is catered more to car audio, but how does the same concept apply to home theater audio? Most HT subs are powered separately so I’d imagine subwoofer clipping isn’t near as prevalent. For the remaining speakers in a HT setup, what speakers are harmed by clipping (larger drivers or tweeters)? Is it high or low frequencies that are clipped? What exactly does clipping sound like, is it obvious?
@BeRAd427

No bro, you're good. Decent amp too I guess for cheap. I have a Sony GTR9001 cuz I was cheap and it was heavy for what it is. I got it hooked up to my Kicker 15 L7. I just turned the gain all the way up and back a little bit and the bass boost sounds fine up until about 70%. Maybe I'm wrong when I say this but this amp doesn't seem to slip very much or at all. Maybe I'm clipping the utter shit out of my sub, but it sounds fine to me and hasn't failed yet. Even after torturing it a lot.... A Lot.

I have an Epik Empire subwoofer. During certain parts of movies, there are Clipping noises. For example, in X-Men: Apocalypse when Apocalypse turns HUGE and destroys things, the sub clips. And the movie Everest clips a lot, too. I have the A/V Receiver at -15db - the minimum setting. I have the sub volume dial at the noon position. It is at 78db with an SPL. When I have the volume at 72 on my Onkyo A/V Receiver, it clips in most movies like that. It is not a defective sub. Another Empire did it, too. Do you know why this is and how to stop it?

@michaelzoran
@michaelzoran 2 года назад
@@JamminClemmons The answer to your question is, "No." If a speaker or speakers "clip," it has nothing to do with the amplifier or receiver being broken. It simply means the speakers have problems. Either the weak speaker cannot handle the large amount of power from the amplifier/receiver or the speaker can handle the "power," but only to a certain decibel volume level. After a high decibel level is reached, there will be "clipping" at certain frequencies in the speakers. For example, in a subwoofer it is usually lower frequencies below 30hz that have problems when a loud decibel level is reached. The subwoofer I have experiences "clipping" problems with frequencies lower than 30hz once the decibel level of 102db is reached. There is nothing wrong with the amplifier/receiver, and there is actually nothing wrong with the speaker. It is just a limitation of that particular speaker. The decibel level can be much higher than 102db and work find with that speaker; however, it won't experience a "clipping" problem until it gets to be a very low frequency lower than 30hz where the subwoofer is BOOMING at a very low frequency. It's not "broken," that is just the way it is. In fact, most subwoofers can't even process sounds that low. It is actually sounds closer to 20hz that give this particular subwoofer a problem. Most subwoofers don't go lower than 25hz. That is actually sort of a good thing, because it is those HUGE frequency sound waves below 25hz that cause the effect of "clipping" problems.

Tell me if im screwing up my sub and amp.i bought a 12w3v3 2 ohm HO wedge for 100 and have a performance teknique 800 watt amp.i bridged it and its suppuse to get 375 at 4 does it drop to 2 ohms bridged.i adjusted all the gains and it bumps loud i hit the loud button and of course it got louder now main question is speaker is 1000/500 rms is bridging going to destroy sub or will it be ok till i get 500/1 rms jl audio.that jl audio is very loud for a wedge box

so what you are saying is that if you have a more powerful amp. you can actually boost up the volume without getting any more cluping on your speaker?

amilcar teck best thing to do is make sure rms rating matches or similar on both amp and sub

When i turn my radio on the sub pops loud 1 time and looks as though it is extended all the way out... no other sound will play from it. Then when the radio is turned off it pops once more and looks normal again. Amp and sub are both wired to 2 ohms properly. What have I done wrong? Amp is MTX TC-6001 Sub is Alpine SWR-12D4

By any chance can a weak battery cause clipping?

I have a new car, expensive service installed my system but had to drill in a bass led knob I've never had, my last car would thump, this one clips and shuts down all audio I have to restart my car, wtf should I do????!?? I'm running 2 12's 1000 watts each with a 1600 watt amp but like I said in my last car I never had it clip

Thank you so much for this video! Perfect explanation for beginners! I use this to show my friends why not to use the amp gain as a volume knob haha

What this guy says is kinda true but it depends on alot of things, like how far into clipping are you pushing the amp, for how long and how much the woofer can handle being overdriven, how good the woofer is at cooling itself, an amp running into dc could potentially put 3 time the rms rated power of the amp into the woofer, as instead of giving more voltage, its now giving more current, but you would hear it sounding very very distorted and only a complete idiot would run their system like that on purpose.. what they dont tell you about cheap amps is that the reason that they are not as loud as expensive amps isnt so much that they lie about the watts, but that the amp cant sustain the voltage due to piss poor power supplys, so it drops the voltage and provides current instead, so the woofer doesnt move as fast and consumes loads of current and gets hot instead, so you get your watts but instead of more voltage and less current, you get less voltage and more current..

It isn't more accurate than high end oscilloscopes. The DD-1 was designed to give you a yes or no answer in regards to any harmonic distortion beyond 1%. If you don't know exactly what to be looking for on an o-scope, you can miss distortion that the DD-1 can pick up. If someone is looking to just set up gains and nothing more, the DD-1 is the tool.
