Nisargadatta Maharaj explained it as food essence. As sweetness is the essence or sattva of sugar, consciousness is the sattva of food.

आचार्य जी से एक प्रश्न- क्या आपके मन में कोई चेतना-मन-बुद्धि-अहंकार के परस्पर संभंध के ढांचे की छवि है जो आपके निरंतर समझते चले आने की उपज हो और जिसे की आप प्रश्नकर्ताओं के उत्तर देने हेतु प्रयोग(refer) में लातें हों? यदि नही है तो मेरी नज़र का खोट बताने की कृपा करें और उसका निवारण करें। और यदि हाँ तो क्या पूरा ढाचें का और उसमें आप ही घटने वाली घटनाओं को जान लेने मात्र से ही मुक्ति है? प्रणाम

I explain you about this with an example •Consciousness mind is like ram •Subconsciousness mind is like rom •The user of both conscious and subconscious mind is you . But when the lot of unwanted application (thought) start running in the ram or conscious mind . User get frusteted . And this user is nothing but is you .
