I wish you were my professor. Thanks for giving me the understanding of what is a cultural anthropology. I had hard time deciding which anthropology class I wanted to take for my next semester in college. Now, I know I want to take cultural anthropology. My goal is to get a degree in geography.
I was planning to enroll between SOC or ANTH for the summer, and I came across your video to search what is anthropology about. This short video made me quite intrigued to learn more!
I've already applied and accepted to do my university degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, but today I really stopped and thought to myself; if I couldn't teach English to travel, what would I be interested in? That's when I found out about Cultural anthropology, and I feel like I'm being seduced over to the dark side haha This video was amazing, thank you for making it!
I started my 5 week cultural anthropology class today online bc of coven and I have to teach myself and this video gave me so much clarity on what I was reading about in my class. thank you so much!! this really helped
I'm going for my starting year majoring in Anthropology, and I'm trying to watch videos and not be intimidated haha I am also 40 years old. So I'm hoping that doesn't matter for my Interest in the field.
The work of Sahlins, Douglas, Mintz and the like skew the idea all cultural anthropologist are interested in living people doesn't it? My favorite definition was always " the study of anything that currently had, once had, or could have anything to do with humanity." Through methodologies Anthropologists can study just about anything.
I'm not going to give all those loser cultural anthropologists access to my precious archaeological resources! In other news, I saw Sidney Mintz give a talk when he was in his 90's. He looked like a doddering old man and I thought it was going to be a train wreck, but he was still super sharp and his talk kicked ass.
Thank you sir I wished you would be given A plot about PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION WHEN you mentioned it 1:00. Again thank you so much.your videos are giving ME more obviousness of what anthropology looks like. It’s easy to catch and also your sense of Humor and karisma is pulling to attention. as a non-student who wants to pursue a degree in anthropology in USA you are helpful. Thank You :)
Thanks! Participant observation is just what it sounds like - hanging out with the culture you are studying to have a first-hand experience to aid in understanding.
can anyone tell me what's the difference and similarities of the concept of anthropologist and sociologist in CULTURE and in SOCIETY pls. i would really appreciate it.
The funny answer is that they are not really all that different. I would say that anthropology is more broad as a discipline, and more global in its reach. A sociologist tends to focus on the culture that they live in. These are broad generalizations though, and of course anthropology is much cooler.
I went to UC Santa Barbara (BA), then Cal State Northridge (MA), and finally UC Riverside (PhD). Lots of colleges will work for you, just don't spend too much! In high school, good grades are the best thing. Try to do well in English to get your writing skills up. You don't have to worry about anthropology classes until college. If you have an opportunity as a senior to take a college class in anthro, that might be worth it. Keep on going!
Modern cultural anthropologists are more activists than scientists. very sad. very disappointed when i graduated with my anthropology degree. thankfully archaeology and biological anthropology are still very interesting.
Why not. Levi-Strauss more, but this is all old-school theory jazz that gets really overblown really quick. I can have that conversation, but then everyone would hate me, including myself.
That is a very involved question. Here's a very short answer - Beyond working in academia, you can work for private companies (as an anthropologist - rare but it does exist!), government agencies, world health/culture groups (and similar). I also know people who used it as a stepping stone to law school. It is also a major that sounds cool, which matters. The American Association of Anthropology (AAA) has lists of job possibilities on their website if you are curious.
Tough one! In college, you would focus on cultural anthropology, then look for schools with profs that specialize in Australia. Rare, but they do exist.
Anthropologists have the corner on the market of fieldwork more than the others. Sociologists just ain't the same. Plus, saying you are an "anthropology" major is about a thousand times cooler than saying you are a "sociology" major.
Okay so I have three questions: 1.) Are you a Anthropologist? 2.) Are there any specific careers I can take that has to do with cultural anthropology? 3.) If so, how much is the pay?🤔
1. Basically. All archaeology degrees are under the umbrella of anthropology (my degree says "anthropology") but I specialize on people of the past instead of people of the present. 2. Yes. Medical anthro, business anthro, college professor, work in non-profit field, Peace Corps, Embassy related things. The jobs in cultural are not as clear-cut as in archaeology. 3. Ranges all over, but tends to be on the lower side (you would be pretty lucky to see six figures)
