In this weeks video I talk all about DBx basing. This is a very popular basing method used by ancients/medieval wargamers and collectors. Here, I show you what it looks like, what are the base sizes, whether it is worth basing your figures this way, and where it all originated.

Thank you for this video. I have never played Historicals before and just bought some 15mm Romans. This is a great video as it is confusing how to base them.

Do yall have any strong opinions of material for basing? Im getting back into wargaming and historically used metal bases but Im thinking if making my own bases from wood

Thanks for sharing and very informative, I always preferred the look of infantry on the 40mm x 20mm bases for the system.

Thanks, Helcarexe26. I appreciate at that. Myself, I like the 15mm. It's nice that people do have the option.

Thanks a bunch, Jeff. I've been asked about 'DBx' basing so many times! Hope it helps those new to ancients gaming.

Good Video. 4 cm width element came in with 7th edition WRG, because most 15 mm were closer to 20 mm and did not fit on the old 6th edition, 3 cm wide, elements. Took me ages to rebase all my elements (or bases) however i have recently discovered 3mm MDF based and am considering rebasing them again. By the looks of it the bases in this video uses 3mm MDF bases, which allows you to place a label on the rear describing the element type. I use this for my 6mm micro-armour and also place a label below the base and they are great.

Yup. My bases - in the video - are all 3mm thick. Thanks for the comment, Peter. ~Fritz

Thank you for this explanation 😀. Doing up some 15mm Punic War figs that were given to me... Founfld Ancients d6 ruleset and sounds like it uses this style and I was trying to get a better idea of it 😀.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m getting some 15mm but play Hail Caesar, I wanted to base for DBA as well since that’s a very popular game here where I live

DBA V3 allows all Infantry (except hordes) , to be on 20mm deep bases for 15/18mm figures .

Yes. It is indeed an option for those so inclined.

That's a very spiffy looking Barker marker! You can also change up the figure scale to base size relationship - I'm working on 6mm figures on bases for 25mm figures.

Great vid buddy. Most rules now tend to be quite flexible I find, mostly. Every now and then though you come across some basing requirements that make you either adapt to one set of rules or go for multiple basing options. Example: Bedouin cavalry. In DBx = LH, 2 per base. In MeG: Cavalry, 3 per base. In AdlG: Both! Light at 2 per base or Medium at 3 per base. Not a problem most times but it's well worth players spending time to scan all the army lists if they're planning to base for multiple rule sets.

I'm almost done with my Carthaginians and I still have Roman, Persians and Macedonians :) I like your L'art de la Guerra videos well done. Hope that you do one for FOG (how to play) they are so useful!

With the ‘new’ 30 years war and English civil war miniatures also 6mm and 10mm figures DBR using the base size for 25mm figures which is a 60mm wide base these smaller figures look really great. Phil has also written rules for the horse and musket era with a ground scale of 8” = 1 mile or 12” = 1 mile for 60mm wide bases. I’ve not played it but players that I know are keen on the Napoleonic games where the manoeuvre element is a division.

In the UK and Europe there are strongly supported competitions for both DBA and DBMM for 6mm and 15mm figures also if you have 20mm figures on 40mm wide bases no one will object.

Liked the video as usual, does this mean you might finally be doing a series of videos on DBMM. It would be greatly appreciated as it is a great game but not well explained in the rulebook.

Thanks for the video. I have a question about some army list entries. My last games of DBA were about 20 years ago at a convention, when dba 2.0 was released. Now i want to get my armies ready for 3.0 and im a bit confused for some of the entries in the army list sections. For example I/48: 6x peltast (Ps or 3/4 Ax). So my guessing for this is: i can take 6x Psiloi or 6x Auxilia as 3 Ax "fast" or 6 Auxilia as 4 Ax "solid" but i can not mix them together like 3x 3 Ax and 3x 4 Ax.

i am thinking of getting into ancient. What is the most popular figure size?
@Forge_n_Brush
@Forge_n_Brush Год назад
15mm and 25/28mm are both very popular - 15mm perhaps has a slight edge. Depends on where you are. I am going by the tournament popularity.
@BearGrisham
@BearGrisham 2 года назад
Correct me if I’m wrong, but outside of the fact that DBX is designed for interchangeability, is it also designed to not have a lot of models making it easier to raise an army?
@Forge_n_Brush
@Forge_n_Brush 2 года назад
It is... in the beginning. However, both DBA and DBMM allow - and DBMM assumes - you will be raising much larger armies. DBMM allows for more traditional sized armes and battles.
@BearGrisham
@BearGrisham 2 года назад
If playing 28mm do you think it’s best to play on a table bigger than 6x4? Does ADLG assume that you’ll be raising much larger armies as well? Also I was going to ask if making unit deeper/adding depth is an issue in DBX basing as long as the frontage was correct ? Just asking as I was thinking of adding more to certain units to get more miniatures on the table.
@Forge_n_Brush
@Forge_n_Brush 2 года назад
@@BearGrisham The depth of elements in DBx is very important. I don't recommend you do so. However, if you choose to do so, try and maintain the recoil, fall backs, etc. distances for normal depth element. As for table size, you will only need larger tables for 28mm if you are playing large battles. A 6' x 4' should allow you to get small to med. sized battles. ANd yes. ADLG has a similar approach to the size of battles. That said, 200 AP battles in ADLG are very, very common among players. ~Fritz

So, pretty safe to make these size base measurements and standards the default for all pre Napoleonic armies?
@Forge_n_Brush
@Forge_n_Brush 2 года назад
Makes all the sense in the world. THat said, most rules out today also make use - or have notes regarding the use - of the DBx standard. There are a few exceptions, but even then, you can adopt. Thanks, Percy. ~Fritz
