✵✵✵✵✵What is EARTHSHINE?
The EARTH lights up the MOON? (Astronomy)
Have you ever looked up at night to see a crescent moon, and noticed the rest of the moon's surface is dimly lit? This is due to Earthshine!
The concept of Earthshine has more far-reaching implications. Astronomers can study the albedo (reflectivity) of surfaces here on Earth, and use it to estimate conditions on far-away planets outside of our own Solar System.

Just about all moons we've ever discovered that are large enough to be spheres, do this. It has nothing to do with how beautiful the planet is, it has to do with the gravitational field of the planet and the tidal forces.

Patrick Roncoski How come we don't see Earthshine during a solar eclipse? Research flat earth.
@gggrow

Two reasons occur to me: 1 - Most of the light never hits earth in the first place; it is blocked by the Moon 2 - The outer ring of the Sun, visible during solar eclipse, is too bright for the Earthshine effect to be visible.

@@Socratica Are ground disturbances on the moon called moonquakes?
@christinaggraham79
@christinaggraham79 5 лет назад
@2:50 the angles of the sun, earth and moon do not seem correct. In order for the moon to receive "earthshine", the moon must be on the daytime side of earth so that the sun can shine on the earth, and the "lit" side of earth to reflect light onto the moon. Otherwise, the sun would just shine it's own light directly onto the moon. But, if that was the case, "earthshine" should never be seen at night. My question is, what is the reason we see "earthshine" at night? And did you say "continents are MORE reflective than oceans"???

No. It is found in permanently shadowed regions specifically. There are more permanently shadowed regions on the far side of the moon, which is why that was the setting for the Duncan Jones film.
@filipve73
@filipve73 3 года назад
@@carultch That should suggest in some point of time the Moon is not always tital locked as assumed?
@carultch
@carultch 3 года назад
@@filipve73 I don't see how that would suggest that, but the moon has been tidally locked for most of its lifetime. It wasn't immediately tidally locked when it first formed, so there was a time when it rotated independently of its orbit. It took about 100 million years to tidally lock to Earth from its formation. That is a small fraction of its 4 billion year lifetime from formation to the current day.

The moon does move west to east. This is why each night the moon's position at a given time is always 12-14 degrees further east than the at the same time the day before.
