My 15 y/o male Golden Retriever was diagnosed with testicular cancer 6 months ago. My regular vet offered to perform a neuter but I asked my vet for a referral to a veterinary oncologist. After my consult with the veterinary oncologist and the surgical oncologist, I decided to have my regular vet perform the surgery, mostly due to the $3125 - $3913 estimate (this is Berkeley, CA). I would have liked to get a second opinion and would have gladly paid for a video consult for guidance if removing the scrotum and the additional tissue deeper into the body that the surgical oncologist would have removed, vs my regular vet leaving the scrotum and certainly not cutting as deep into the body cavity, would be worth the extra $3000+. Of course this is sort of an impossible question to answer but I'm happy with the result so far. I feel lucky because if a dog gets cancer this is probably the best one to get.
