In this video, you will learn about Fieldbus.
Fieldbus isn’t really one thing but more of a collection of things.
Fieldbus is a group of protocols that are used in the industrial arena.
The Fieldbus protocols have been standardized as IEC 61158.
Basically, Fieldbus works on a network that permits various topologies such as the ring, branch, star, and daisy chain.
Prior to Fieldbus, industrial controller systems were connected using RS232 serial communications. As you know, serial communications allowed only two devices to communicate.
Whereas today, the Fieldbus connections are more closely compared to the typical Ethernet connections where you can connect multiple field devices to a single connection point that would then connect to the controller.
However, Fieldbus is not a connection type, per se, but instead, a description used to indicate a group of protocols.
There are several protocols in the group such as ControlNet in the Allen Bradley family, Modbus, Profibus, EtherCAT, HART, CIP, and many more.
A primary benefit of Fieldbus is for field connected devices. For instance, consider you have several field devices that are quite a distance from your controller.
With Fieldbus devices such as sensors, motors, lamps, switches, these devices are connected to an “I/O data block”, which is then connected to a “field distribution device”, which is connected to a Fieldbus power supply, then finally connected back to the Programmable Logic controller.

Thanks for the vídeo! Where can i find which protocols accept each brand of plc?
@realpars
@realpars 5 лет назад
Hi there, Thanks for your comment. Depending on which PLC brand you are going to use, it is better to refer to its Datasheet and specifications on its website and search for its supporting protocols. By the way, all kinds of famous PLC brands such as Siemens, Allen Bradley, Schneider, etc. have some utility cards which you can add them to make them support other types of protocols. In addition, there are some manufacturers that produce a variety of "Gateways" to convert their existing common network protocols (like Profibus DP or Ethernet) to other types that you may need. For example, you can use a Profibus DP/PA converter or a Profibus PA to Ethernet protocol.

The standard for communication protocols at 0:12 in the video is IEC 61185. Should this be not IEC 61850 instead?
@realpars

Hi there, Thank you for your question. I wanted to clarify that at the 12-second mark in our content, we mentioned IEC 61158, not IEC 61185. To assist you in your learning journey, I have provided a link to the official IEC website below for your reference: webstore.iec.ch/publication/66931 We hope you find this resource helpful for your learning endeavors. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance. Happy learning!

can you give me an example where fieldbuses are used in a smart home?
@realpars
@realpars 3 года назад
Instrument fieldbuses are usually not used in a home setting, mainly because there are more efficient and cost-effective ways to interface the relatively few sensors in a home. You could consider ethernet as a Fieldbus, especially for IoT devices with ethernet built-in.
@aslangamestudio5607
@aslangamestudio5607 3 года назад
@@realpars My teacher said that ethernet isn't a Fieldbus and I need to have some information about where a Fieldbus is used in a smart home. I was thinking about how temperatures, lighting, cameras, doors, and more are connected to a router or something via a Fieldbus which is then connected to the app you have on a phone. But I need some more developed answers, it's useless to search for information about smart homes online.

Can fieldbus use fiber optic cable?
@realpars
@realpars 5 месяцев назад
Hi Lucas, Thank you for your question! Yes, you can indeed use fiber optic cable. However, it's important to ensure compatibility by installing a converter in your PLC rack to transition from electrical to fiber, and likewise, a converter at the receiving end to convert from fiber back to electrical. Make sure to select the appropriate converter for your PLC and device.

How to determine the length required and it's limits?
@realpars
@realpars 4 года назад
Every fieldbus type has a limit as to the bus length. For Profibus, the maximum length is determined by the bus speed selected. At lower speeds (93.75 Kbps), Profibus can be run 1200 meters . At 500 kbps, the maximum length is 400 meters. At 12 Mbps, the maximum length is 100 meters. The maximum length for ControlNet is 1000 meters with 2 taps (drop connectors) installed, and is reduced by 16.3 meters for each additional tap installed. With the maximum number of taps (48) is 250 meters. The "length" of a bus segment is usually determined by the total length of the trunk plus the lengths of the drops from the trunk to the individual devices.

ethercat is industrial ethernet?
@realpars
@realpars Год назад
Yes, EtherCat is one of several protocols that are based on TCP/IP and can be referred to as an Industrial Ethernet. Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and EtherCat are all industrial ethernet protocols, although each is unique and cannot be freely interchanged with one another.
