You seriously deserve more views and subs man. Your method of explanation is very crisp and precise. I was thinking about the function of the neutral wire since a long time and your simulation cleared my doubt. But I still have one question. I now know that the neutral keeps the phase voltage constant but HOW exactly does it do that? As far as I understand, by KCL the signed sum of all the currents meeting at a junction is always zero anyway. So why do we need the neutral wire to keep the sum zero? Also, if the neutral stays at (almost) zero volts w.r.t the ground, how does current flow in it without any potential difference?

Thank u for the explanation. I'm not majoring electrical engineering, but ur explanation was very easy to understand even to me! But one thing I wonder is what I read recently in a paper is that in 3-phase motor, like PMSM, the neutral point is intentionally designed to float to prevent harmonic current flow. Well, I'm a college student majoring in mechanical engineering, so I don't have much background knowledge in this field. So I'm really confused. Can u help me?

I'm really happy that i landed on your channel yet you are my favourite, I can suggest the following topic : why always there is acceptable difference in voltage between earth & neutral in normal cases ? ...Once there was an incident in a facility where the voltage difference between E&N was high which led to not operating a machine! ..we checked and found earth cable was stolen from transformer side , provided new cable and voltage difference came back to acceptable level , what's the science behind it ?

@Sidg2
@Sidg2 2 года назад
Sir I have a query. In normal case of 3-phase connection when neutral wire is also well connected, just the loads are unbalanced which is obvious in daily life. Some current will flow through neutral wire & go to ground as return path through nearby distribution transformer, Right! But my question is, does the current in neutral wire only go to one direction (i.e., to the direction towards ground) or it also change its direction (forward & backward) in neutral wire like other three phases? (Note:- Consider the Neutral wire is well connected to nearby transformer) . In your circuit simulation video at 4:00 mins, current in neutral is flowing forward & backward directions but I think it should go in one direction only (i.e., towards ground). Please clarify my doubt.

The transfomer is 220V delta pri and 110V wye sec. She expecting line to ground voltage to be half the 110V which is around 50 plus volts but she got only 27V. Generally neutral is bonded with earth. If we have poor or bad Earth then what will happen with floating neutral current
@TheMadMagician87
@TheMadMagician87 3 года назад
The earth can serve as a return path as well (just not an efficient one compared to a nice, low resistance copper neutral wire). So, if you have a bonded neutral and earth like a MEN point, and the earth is broken, then most of the time the system will work fine (any imbalance is carried on the unbroken neutral). If, however, that neutral is now broken and the earth was already previously broken as well, you don't have a complete circuit as you have live phases coming in, but no return path. This is extremely dangerous because if there is any sort of short to the body/chassis of a piece of equipment, it may have gone unnoticed previously, but now if anyone touches it, their body may serve as the part that completes a return path via ground (since the copper cable ground is broken/open) and thus they get electrocuted.
